The brand-new Mitsubishi ASX has just debuted in Europe and it bears strikingly similar proportions to the Renault Captur. The model isn’t yet confirmed for our local market but it may join the Japanese automaker’s local fleet in the coming years.

The original model to wear the ASX nameplate landed in South Africa back in 2010. For context, that is the same year we hosted the FIFA World Cup and a time when BlackBerry cellphones were all the craze. Now that we are well aware of exactly how long ago it debuted, Europe has just taken the covers off of the second-generation model.

If you think it looks familiar, that is compliments of the Renault Nissan Mitsubishi: Alliance 2030. This brand-new Mitsubishi ASX is ultimately a rebadged Renault Captur, both of which ride on the CMF-B platform. Mitsubishi has unveiled the new SUV to be sold in European markets which means the UK and derivatives for our market aren’t confirmed at this point in time.

Mitsubishi has done their best to impart its existing design language to the French design and hopes to use the model to attract a portion of the SUV market in Europe. Expectedly, the model bears similar powertrains to its French counterpart and will be offered consumers with a selection of ICE, hybrid and PHEV powertrains by March 2023.

These include a 1,0-litre 67 kW three-cylinder, 1,3-litre 103 kW four-cylinder mild hybrid and 1,6-litre four-cylinder with outputs ranging between 105 kW in the hybrid and 117 kW in the PHEV.

Offered in various levels of trim, the brand-new Mitsubishi ASX includes an analog instrument display flanking a 4,2-inch screen for the driver on the base model while a 7-inch digital display and 10,25-inch version are available on the higher levels of specification. A standard 7-inch infotainment screen is standard while a larger 9,3-inch derivative is an upgrade – both of which support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

On the safety side of the ASX, the model includes emergency brake assist, lane departure warning, traffic sign recognition, and parking assist as standard while more outlay on better-equipped models will include blind spot assist, active lane departure warning, speed alert, adaptive cruise control and active lane-following assist.
