What used to be the headquarters of Hewlett-Packard is now home to Tesla engineers. The carmaker opened the doors of its new facility in Palo Alto, California, giving a tour the California Governor Gavin Newsom and already talking about expansion.
The carmaker will focus on hiring engineers proficient in research and development and artificial intelligence, hoping to speed up efforts to produce autonomous vehicles and robots.
Musk said the new facility is “effectively a headquarters of Tesla” and that it is “kind of a dual-headquartered company.”
Tesla moved its main headquarters to Austin, Texas, in December 2021. They are now located adjacent to the company’s Gigafactory there. The reason for the move: Musk disagreed with California pandemic safety measures. Moreover, a more favourable tax rate undoubtedly helped him make the decision.
The Fremont, California plant remains in operation and will even increase its production to 600,000 vehicles each year.
