The AirPlay feature aims to deliver high-quality playbacks.
Apple CarPlay still hasn't made its way into Tesla; a feud between Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Apple CEO Tim Cook is seen to be the root cause. Now, it seems like the beef has been squashed as the EV maker will integrate Apple AirPlay as part of the Tesla App Update 4.23.
Tesla investor Sawyer Merritt shared a link to the Not A Tesla App on Twitter, where Apple AirPlay has been found in the release notes. While no official word has been put out regarding the matter, Musk responded to a tweet last year that he would discuss the integration of AirPlay with Tesla audio engineers.

The upcoming feature is expected to be available in the Tesla Model S, Model 3, Model X, and Model Y. It should provide higher-quality audio streaming, including music and podcasts. Video streaming could be part of the feature if it wouldn't upset the NHTSA.
Functions like skipping and rewinding/fast-forwarding a playback using an Apple smartphone should be possible via AirPlay. Screen mirroring via the “Share” function in AirPlay could also be part of the update. Currently, Apple Music is available in Tesla EVs.

The possible integration of AirPlay would suggest that Musk only wants its native OS in Tesla infotainment systems, and the lack of Apple CarPlay has nothing to do with a feud. Although, a web-based application called Tesla Android allows Apple CarPlay on Tesla screens. It may be a hack around the system, but CarPlay fans driving a Tesla have this alternative.
One brand not shy about not using Apple CarPlay from the get-go is Rivian. General Motors also announced to drop Apple CarPlay (including Android Auto) on all its future EVs earlier this year. Both brands have similar answers to the matter – in-house software is the best solution instead of relying on Apple.
