Someone really wanted to get Elon Musk's attention.
A self-proclaimed fan of Tesla applied to extend Tesla's trademark for use in airplanes and boats. According to Bloomberg, the filing was made on December 28 with the US Patent and Trademark Office.
In September last year, Elon Musk said the Tesla Cybertruck would be waterproof enough to serve briefly as a boat. For now, the Cybertruck is as much a boat as an upturned umbrella in a puddle, despite Tesla's continued insistence that the oft-delayed truck will debut this year.
Regardless, the as-yet-unproven claim clearly had some merit, despite the government's best attempts to persuade Cybertruck owners not to use the truck as a boat.

What's more, a Seattle company has created the boat you see above, the Cybercatamaran. The boat accessory starts at $22,000 and beat both Musk and the Tesla fan to the punch as far as floating electric vehicles are concerned. The trademark filing classifies the new trademark as “not for land vehicles,” per Bloomberg.
Tesla legally owns the trademark application, as listed by its signer, Jerome Eady. Currently, the application is “awaiting assignment to an examining attorney.”
People have played games with brand trademark filings before. In December last year, someone filed a trademark for the name Flying Spur under the Rolls-Royce name.

The filing fooled a few people, and Bloomberg states it saw several news outlets accidentally claim Tesla itself applied, potentially hinting that Musk's admittedly wild boat claims had some truth to them. The publication, evidently having spoken with Eady, says he is not affiliated with Tesla and filed the application without notifying the brand.
As Tesla does not have a media relations department of any kind, it was not available for comment, though it does say the patent office also has not responded to a request for comment.
Likely, if Tesla does take notice of the filings, the brand's CEO will make some statement about it via Twitter.
