TopAuto reader Lucas recently upgraded to a new Suzuki Swift GLX.
He took delivery of his Swift on April Fool’s Day 2022 and while driving home a teenager next to the highway threw a brick at his car – not as a practical joke.
“The brick bounced off my windshield and the entire panel shattered, with glass shards even covering the rear seats,” said Lucas.
“After I got over the anger, I found it quite funny that it happened on the day it did.”
“I thought to myself, ‘today of all days!’ it was just perfect timing. I got the windshield replaced quite easily through insurance and all is well now.”
Luckily he came out of this incident unscathed and it did not sour his opinion of the Swift. He tells us more about it below.
Which model do you own?
I just traded up to a brand new Suzuki Swift GLX, the manual model, mainly because the 2015 Jeep Renegade I previously had was uneconomical and underpowered for its size.
I’ve had the Swift for around four weeks by now and put down 1,173 kilometres.
What are your three favourite things about the Swift?
It’s much more efficient than my old Jeep. The consumption currently stands at 4.85l/100km and the engine is barely broken in.
I specifically also like the alloy mags of the GLX. Now I don’t have to worry about spending money on replacing things, such as hubcaps, which have been stolen in my past experiences.
It might not be unique to this car, but the red-and-black paint job is a big plus in my books, too.
Which three things do you like least about the Swift?
On the highway or a steep hill, you notice the lack of power from the 1.2-litre motor. I think this engine would’ve been better paired to a turbo, but that will probably drive up the price significantly.
The fact that Android Auto is wired is another frustration, as I now have to connect my phone to a cable every time I’m in the car otherwise I’m unable to use the feature.
It also comes with one of those tiny spare wheels, and not with a full-size alloy.
Are you happy with your purchase?
Very happy. The car is easy to park and manoeuvre in traffic and around town, and the clutch is soft while gear shifts are smooth.
The GLX trim also provides all the tech I want, the highlights for me being the reverse camera and keyless entry in a “budget” hatchback.
Would you recommend the Swift?
I would definitely recommend the Swift to buyers looking for something affordable and, in my opinion, quite good looking.
It’s very fuel-efficient and for a relatively cheap car offers great features, but it’s no speed demon.
