The Ford F-150 Lightning may have just caused an upset. It proved to have a longer range than the Rivian R1T against all odds. On paper, the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning shouldn’t have won this range test, but it had more power than the 2022 Rivian R1T.
How much range does the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning have?

The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning standard range model gets an EPA-estimated range of 230 miles. You can upgrade to the F-150 Lightning Extended Range model for an EPA-estimated 320 miles of range.
With the Rivian R1T, you get an EPA-estimated range of 314 miles with the large battery pack. Soon it will be available with a standard battery that provides about 260 miles of range. It should have a lower price.
Edmunds took both trucks out to test these figures. Their F-150 Lightning Platinum model is rated to have 300 miles of range, and they drove it on the same route as the Rivian R1T with the large battery pack.
The F-150 weighed in at 6,871 lbs, which is 1,100 lbs heavier than the F-150 Hybrid. The Rivian R1T Launch Edition tips the scales at 7,069 lbs.
The team drove both trucks for hours, and the Lightning lasted a whole 332 miles. This was 32 more miles than expected. The R1T was equipped with 21-inch wheels, and it made it 317 miles. Switching to 20-inch wheels helped it make it to 323 miles.
How much power does the F-150 Lightning have?
The Standard Range 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning cranks out 452 hp and 775 lb-ft of torque. The Extended Range F-150 provides 58 hp and 775 lb-ft of torque. It can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 4.0 seconds.
When properly equipped, the Lightning can tow up to 10,000 lbs, and it can carry a payload of up to 2,000 lbs.
The 2022 Rivian R1T brags about its 835 hp and 908 lb-ft of torque. It aces from 0 to 60 mph in about 3.3 seconds. It can tow up to 11,000 lbs and carry a payload of up to 1,760 lbs.
It’s worth noting that the Lightning is larger. It’s 96 inches wide, 78.9 inches tall, and 232.7 inches long. It has a ground clearance of 8.6 inches.
The R1T is 79 inches wide, 75.5 inches tall, and 217 inches long. It has an 8.7-inch ground clearance. The Lightning is a full-size truck, while the R1T is closer to a mid-size option.
How much does the F-150 Lightning cost?

You can get started with the 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning for $46,974. The top-spec Platinum trim increases this figure to $96,874. The Rivian R1T price kicks off at $67,500. The Launch Edition brings the price up to $80,000.
These prices are the MSRPs, so they don’t include the destination fees or dealer markups. But on a positive note, both trucks could still qualify for the $7,500 federal tax credit.
In Washington, charging electric vehicles costs 11 cents for kWh. So the 332-mile trip with the Lightning cost $16.58, and it was $17.16 for the R1T. Hawaii is currently charging 44 cents per kWh, meaning the same trip would have cost the Lightning $66.32 there.
So far, the Lightning has provided the best range upon hitting the road with a full charge until the batteries are completely drained. We can’t wait to see how the GMC Hummer and Chevy Silverado EV compare.
