The popularity of sunroofs has increased multiple folds in the recent past
Not long ago, an electric sunroof used to be a feature exclusive to a luxury car or SUV costing northwards of the Rs 25 lakh mark. The cut-throat competition among mass-market carmakers and the increase in demand of new-generation car buyers have led to the availability of the feature of an electric sunroof in the segment of compact cars as well.
The significance of sunroofs in new cars has increased so much that many car-buying decisions reach a conclusion just based on its availability or not. Here, we bring to you the cars available below the Rs 10 lakh mark, which offer the novelty and convenience of an electric sunroof.
Tata Nexon
But that has changed over the years
The Tata Nexon had a dismal start when it arrived in India in 2017. However, the sub-four-meter compact SUV from Tata Nexon gradually climbed the ladders of success in all these years. Currently, it is one of those names that consistently appear on the list of the top ten selling cars of India every month.
The Tata Nexon is currently the most affordable car in India to feature a sunroof. The sunroof is available as a feature from the mid-spec XM(S) variant onwards, which carries a price tag of Rs 9.10 lakh. This variant of the Tata Nexon sources its power from a 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, which produces 120 PS of maximum power and 170 Nm of peak torque output and is available with a 6-speed manual gearbox.
Honda Jazz
Even though the sunroofs do not suit our Indian weather conditions, customers want them
The Honda Jazz might be off the radar of many premium hatchback buyers in recent times, which is evident in its triple-digit volume figures every month. Though even today, Jazz is one of the most practical and spacious hatchbacks that money can buy in India. With the facelifted avatar launched in 2020, the Honda Jazz became even more feature-rich, with a sunroof being one of the features added to the car.
The top-spec ZX variant of the Honda Jazz comes with a sunroof as standard. The manual Honda Jazz ZX is priced at Rs 9.05 lakh, which comes standard with a 1.2-litre four-cylinder naturally-aspirated petrol engine under its hood. Paired to a 5-speed manual gearbox, this engine churns out a maximum power output of 90 PS and a peak torque output of 110 Nm.
Hyundai i20
But that has changed
While considering premium hatchbacks, the Hyundai i20 has always led the features game by offering several first-in-class features. The first-generation Hyundai i20 used to be available with a sunroof, a feature that made a comeback in the third-generation version of the car in 2020.
The most affordable variant of the Hyundai i20 with a sunroof is the petrol-powered Asta (O). Priced at Rs 9.50 lakh, this particular variant of the Hyundai i20 is available with a 1.2-litre four-cylinder naturally-aspirated petrol engine with a 5-speed manual gearbox. While this engine pumps out 83 PS of maximum power output, the peak torque output produced by the engine is 114 Nm. The sunroof is also available in other higher-priced variants of i20, which are available with the 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine.
Honda WR-V
A few years ago, the most affordable cars with factory-fitted sunroofs were worth more than Rs 20 lakh
Another sub-10 lakh car from Honda available with an electric sunroof is the Honda WR-V. However, unlike the Jazz, the WR-V is offered with a sunroof right from the beginning. The Honda WR-V is a compact crossover-style hatchback, which is based on the Jazz and has substantial styling tweaks over the former.
The top-spec petrol-manual version of the Honda WR-V is its most affordable variant to feature an electric sunroof. This particular variant is priced at Rs 9.89 lakh and is available with the combination of a 1.2-litre four-cylinder naturally-aspirated petrol engine with a 5-speed manual gearbox. Just like in the Jazz, the engine in the WR-V also makes 90 PS of maximum power and 110 Nm of peak torque output.
Mahindra XUV300
Well, there are quite a few!
When Mahindra introduced the XUV300 for the first time, the sunroof was available only in the top-spec W8 (O) variant. However, with a rise in competition and the feature game getting stronger, Mahindra started offering the XUV300 with a sunroof from the mid-spec W6 variant onwards.
The W6 variant with a combination of the petrol engine with a manual transmission is the most affordable variant of the Mahindra XUV300 to get the convenience of an electric sunroof. This variant of the XUV300 carries a price tag of Rs 9.99 lakh and comes with a 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that produces 110 PS of maximum power and 200 Nm of peak torque output. A 6-speed manual gearbox is the transmission choice in this variant.
Hyundai Venue
Cars with sunroofs have gained massive popularity in the recent times
Hyundai tried to disrupt the sub-four-meter compact SUV when it launched the Venue against rivals like Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Tata Nexon and Ford Ecosport. Hyundai tried to play its traditional game of offering first-in-class features, and when it launched, it was the first SUV in its category to offer an electric sunroof.
The electric sunroof is available in Hyundai Venue from the SX variant with turbocharged petrol and iMT gearbox. Priced at Rs 10.09 lakh, this variant offers a combination of a 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine paired with a 6-speed iMT gearbox under its hood. This engine produces a maximum power output of 120 PS and a maximum torque output of 172 Nm in the Hyundai Venue.
Kia Sonet
Like its distant cousin from Hyundai, the Kia Sonet also arrived in India with an extensively long list of features. Some of these features were available as first-in-class features. The Kia Sonet is available with several variants and powertrain combinations, many of which are available with an electric sunroof.
The most affordable variant of the Kia Sonet that gets an electric sunroof as standard is its mid-spec HTX variant with a turbo-petrol engine with an iMT gearbox, just like the Hyundai Venue. The duo of a 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine paired with a 6-speed iMT gearbox in this variant is the same as that in the Venue, and here too, the engine produces a maximum power output of 120 PS and a peak torque output of 172 Nm.
