But it looks like it's worth every penny.
Velocity Modern Classics (VMC), the Florida-based restomodding specialists behind the Signature Series F-250, has revealed its latest project based on a classic F-100 truck. Let's not beat around the bush: it looks incredible.
VMC has lovingly restored this example, merging classic American styling with a modern powertrain and high-end custom details. Hidden beneath iconic bodywork, you'll find a chassis from Roadstershop, along with an independent front suspension and a brand new nine-inch rear axle from Ford.
The engine is equally as impressive. Lift the square hood, and you'll find a Gen III Ford Coyote 5.0-liter V8 (borrowed from the Mustang), which is mated to a 10-speed automatic gearbox. With 460 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque, this F-100 should be capable of creating some smoky burnouts. And thanks to the in-house-developed stainless steel performance exhaust, it should make a spine-tingling sound, too.
All that performance is kept in check with hydraulically-assisted four-wheel disc brakes, Fox coilovers, and 245/50 Michelin tires. Upgrading to the Street Edition adds six-piston brakes, sway bars at the front and rear, as well as double-adjustable coilovers.
The exterior is arguably the highlight of this package. Pictured here is the Street Edition in a classy two-tone blue and white paintwork, which works beautifully with the staggered (19-inch front, 20-inch rear) Forgeline wheels. The only modern accessories you'll find on the exterior are the LED headlights from JW Speaker. Gorgeous chrome detailing adorns the rest of the bodywork.
Inside, the once-practical cabin has been transformed into a leather-lined palace. Quilted brown leather adorns just about every surface and can be found on the dashboard, door panels, and seats. The color-matched carpets and custom floor mats are a nice touch. The fascia has been color-matched to the exterior, with the white-painted metal adding a pop of much-needed color to the cabin.
VMC has added several modern amenities without ruining the overall look. As such, you'll find a tilt-adjustable steering column, air-conditioning from Vintage Air, a high-end audio system with Bluetooth connectivity, and digital gauges. Lastly, a selection of chrome-finished embellishments (and a three-spoke GT steering wheel) provides the right amount of brightwork.
As is the case with so many restomods, this slick F-100 carries an eye-watering price tag of $279,900 – the same amount you'd need to purchase eight base model Ford F-150 XLs. Then again, if your bank manager approves, you'll have a truly special truck in your garage.
Old-school American trucks are hugely popular in the aftermarket scene, and plenty of companies will happily build you a resto-modded example. Even Ford itself has modernized an older F-100. Called the Eluminator, it's powered by the same electric motors you'd find in a Mustang Mach-E GT Performance Edition.
