The Smart #1 has been spotted in China. Pronounced as “number one”, the new electric (EV) crossover is the second model to ride on Geely’s Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA).
Smart Concept #1
Despite the heavy camo, much of the design elements of the Smart #1 have been carried over from the concept car. Bits like the swooping lines, sloping roof line, gaping front grille, and single-piece LED taillight are largely similar to the concept car.
That said, the suicide doors seen on the concept car will likely remain as a concept-only feature.
Concept's car interior, note the similarities
Spyshots of the Smart #1’s interior reveal that the production version could carry most of the design cues seen on the concept car, albeit with its gold trim swapped out for a more conventional silver and black trimming.
A large infotainment screen perched on top of two horizontal air-conditioning vents, with two storage compartments located beneath it.
Powertrain details remain under tight wraps for now, though some news outlet speculated that the Smart #1 could offer up to 200 kW of power. Twin-motor, 4-wheel drive versions of the Smart #1 could also be offered.
What about Malaysia?
Nearly two months ago, Smart signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with Proton that will see Proton Edar appointed as the importer, distributor, and dealer for Smart in Malaysia and Thailand.
Smart Automobile (Nanning) Sales Co. Ltd. (a fully owned subsidiary of smart Automobile) will fulfil the role of a gateway for Smart to the region.
While Proton Edar did not specify which models will be finding their way to Malaysia, the Smart #1 has a good chance of finding its way here.
For Smart / Proton Edar to price the Smart #1 competitively in Malaysia, it would have to do so before 2023 ends, as the import and excise duties are exempted for imported (CBU) EVs and is valid till 31-December 2023.
Should Smart / Proton Edar chose to locally-assemble (CKD) the Smart #1, then the import and excise duties are exempted until 31-December 2025 (unlikely to happen).
