In what can only be an assumed attempt to weaken the visibility of spy photographers — and also anyone else looking at these spy shots — the 2023 Audi Q5 Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) was caught in the Austrian Alps in the most headache-inducing camouflage.
The photographers — no confirmation on whether or not they’ve regained the ability to see straight — snapped some photos of the Q5 PHEV, which seems to have a similar look to the current model, but with a slightly longer wheelbase, potentially adding a bit of space to the cabin and second row. The third-generation Q5 is still mostly under wraps, but a redesigned grille can be spied. It sports vertical air curtains on both sides, as well as a larger lower intake and narrower headlights.
There are still many similarities to the current model. The tight camo allows us to see that there’s still a single-frame grille, but those vertical air intakes give it a focused, if not slightly aggressive, look and feel.

A yellow EV sticker can be seen, as well as a charging port lid on the driver’s-side rear quarter panel. A pair of exhaust tips can be seen peeking out on both ends of the bumper. The combination is a giveaway that it’s the PHEV in testing.
For 2022, Audi also offered the lower-priced Q5 40 (not a PHEV) that starts at $45,250 and runs on regular-grade fuel. Since Audi will continue producing ICE vehicles, it’s fairly certain the Q5 will continue to have a variety of gas, hybrid, and PHEV options. The 2022 Audi Q5 55 TFSI e Quattro Progressiv S tronic has a starting price of $71,700. The new model, likely to be a bit pricier than the 2022 model, will receive a more powerful battery that will increase its electric-only range to 45 km, from its previous 37 km.
Audi’s third generation of the popular mid-size luxury SUV is expected to be revealed in 2023, and it’s sure to be a sight for sore eyes, as opposed to this tested vehicle, which instead is quite literally making my eyes sore.
A Sportback body style is also expected to continue with the next generation (though it perhaps won’t available in the lower-priced, regular-grade fuel version).
