The joint venture combines Honda's manufacturing prowess with Sony's expertise in consumer and communication technologies.
Sony- Sony and Honda have named its collaborative effort: Sony Honda Mobility Inc.
- The joint venture is moving forward but is still waiting on regulatory bodies to approve the new business.
- The JV is targeting 2025 to start EV production and to launch its “provision of services for mobility.”
The Honda and Sony electric vehicle collaboration finally has a name. The creatively named Sony Honda Mobility Inc. will pair the electronics giant and the automaker in their electric vehicle endeavors. As you’d imagine, officially naming this joint venture points toward Honda and Sony moving this alliance along, and getting closer to producing electric vehicles.
In the release informing the world of the joint venture’s name, the companies reiterate the 2025 production target. This still might seem aggressive, but this joint venture would rely on Honda’s manufacturing prowess and whatever electric mobility solutions the company already has in development. With that assumption, the 2025 production target doesn’t seem that farfetched. Sony showed its Vision-S EV concept (pictured above) at CES in 2020, as well as a Vision-S 02 all-electric SUV this year at the Las Vegas tech fest.
As cars become increasingly reliant on consumer and communication technologies, it makes sense to reach out to a company that does exactly that. While Honda will be bringing its car production legacy to the table, Sony says it offers its “expertise in the development and application of imaging, sensing, telecommunication, network, and entertainment technologies.”
The two companies are still waiting for regulatory bodies to approve the collaboration.
