The Haval Jolion S is the sporty variant of the ever-popular Chinese crossover. It's not just sporty in aesthetic but also execution too. Should you buy a used one though?
The Haval Jolion S is not just your standard family crossover with a beauty kit on; it has a little more substance than that. My colleague Lawrence Minnie had the vehicle on test, and you can watch his thoughts here.
The Jolion S maintains a high standard of specification. The vehicle has some unique styling elements in the form of gloss black accents complimenting the car’s exterior. Such accents include front and rear bumper trim pieces, door trims, and even the 18-inch wheels. The sporty treatment isn’t just limited to aesthetics but also the powertrain. There’s a new generation 1.5 litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 130kW and 270Nm with all that power sent to the front wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. Not only that, there’s launch control to boot. The Jolion S is cheeky and has the elements making the adornment of an ‘S’ badge justifiable. The question now is, should you buy a used one?
Price
New
The Haval Jolion S from new only has one variant, the ‘S Super Luxury’, and prices start from R489 550. With that purchase price, there’s a standard 5 year /60 000km service plan and a 5 year /100 000km warranty. Here’s how much monthly repayments look like.

Used
Doing a quick search on AutoTrader found that there are plenty of used and new Jolion S’s on the market, over 100 and counting. From our investigation, we’ve found that the average market value for a 2023 example is R468 000, and the average mileage is around the 1000km mark. Bear in mind that the Jolion S is a relatively new model, as it was only released in January 2023. Thus when we speak of affordability, you will be making a saving by going after what are essentially demo units or potentially delivery mileage examples. Plus, you can retain the aforementioned service plan and warranty.

Verdict
If you’re planning to own a Haval Jolion S for about the usual 3-5 year ownership cycle, then buying a used one at this point in time would be a good idea. As far as common faults go, it’s too early to say, as the vehicle is still relatively new, so we’ll have to wait sometime to see if any common faults would occur. However, the car should be under warranty, so you won’t have to worry too much about that. Give it a shot.
