Taking the phrase land yacht to a whole new meaning, the latest and second Rolls-Royce Boat Tail is all about bespoke opulence. Unveiled at Lake Como recently, the open air English model incorporates some magnificent and unique materials into its one-off construction.
The two-door, four-seater model which succeeds the lingering lines of the Sweptail becomes the second to wear the Boat Tail nameplate, with the first being purchased by Beyonce and Jay-Z for the alleged sum of $28 million or around R441 million. This one however has been commissioned by a pearling industry magnate and takes bespoke opulence to another dimension and would expectedly boast a similar price tag, if not slightly more.
The first of the details can be found in the exterior finish with the body panelling exuding inscrutable hues, or colours composed of what they are reflecting rather than their own individual pigments. Alex Innes, Head of Coachbuild Design at Rolls-Royce mentioned that the second Rolls-Royce Boat Tail can portray different tones depending on the environment it finds itself in. This detail would probably make the double-digit optional-extra metallic paint on most new cars seem like pocket change.
The next is a stylistic element prevalent on all Rolls-Royce models and iconic throughout the automotive industry; the Pantheon grille, which is meant to signify modernity and flawless quality. With this very component, fashioned out of a single aluminium billet, this very mantra is embodied. The second Rolls-Royce Boat Tail shown here carves the soft metal into the familiar shape which creates the striking and recognisable front fascia.
Due to the profession of the magnate behind the commission of this bespoke creation, the English creation naturally incorporated pearl details into components of the sweeping Rolls. The same can be said for the exterior paint finish which isn’t intended to mimic the look of rose gold but rather by the hues of pearl shells provided by the client. In addition to this, pearl materials have found purpose in the instrumentation and timepiece draped on the dashboard.
This commissioned collaboration which intends to move beyond ordinary constraints and pre-conceived notions of possibility has raised the bar once again. We are just not sure how they can top this bespoke opulence in the future.
