Samsung SDI has just opened a new battery R&D centre in Shanghai called SDI China Research and Development Center (SDIRC). The new battery centre in China should boost the technological competitiveness of the S.Korean battery maker.
According to a report in Korean media, the new centre will focus on building partnerships with Chinese universities and research institutes to secure core battery technologies. A new research lab at the centre will focus on discovering new functional and affordable materials.
The company is the sixth-largest battery maker in the world and Korea’s third largest battery maker. Samsung SDI has already opened SDI R&D Europe (SDIRE) in Munich last July and SDI R&D America (SDIRA) in Boston last August. The Chinese research centre is supposed to complete the company’s worldwide network, according to the Korean report. This global R&D network is supposed to ensure that the key frameworks for battery production are competitive for different regional environments.
“By leveraging global technological competence and talent pools, we will further bolster our pursuit of outstanding technological competitiveness,” said Samsung SDI President and CEO Choi Yoon-ho, according to the media report.
