When Rolls-Royce Motor Cars made that historic announcement in 2021 to commit to electric technology with the confirmation of a new all-electric car. Spectre was unveiled to the world at the Home of Rolls-Royce in West Sussex last October, and the first customer deliveries will happen later this year. In the meantime, Spectre makes its official appearance in Malaysia to give a physical manifestation for customers to admire.

Spectre marks the beginning of a new chapter for Rolls-Royce Motor Cars as it makes a commitment to have its entire portfolio be fully electric by the end of 2030. Spectre represents a promise made, a prophecy kept and a remarkable undertaking. Spectre demonstrates how perfectly Rolls-Royce is suited to electrification. The marque has a long-standing connection with electric technologies. In 1900, Rolls-Royce co-founder Charles Rolls prophesised an electric future for the motor car. Having experienced an electric vehicle named The Columbia Electric Carriage, he foresaw the technology’s suitability as a clean, noiseless alternative to the internal combustion engine – providing there was sufficient infrastructure to support it.

The other half of the luxury marque, Sir Henry Royce, happened to be one of the world’s first electrical engineers. He never built an electric car but his company, F H Royce & Co, made electric motors in 1902 for Pritchett & Gold, a London-based battery-maker that had diversified into building electric cars. But many years later, in 2011, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars showcased a fully electric Experimental Phantom concept named 102EX. This was followed by 103EX, a dramatic design study that anticipated a bold electric future for the marque.

Since this significant moment in the storied history of Rolls-Royce, Spectre has been on a remarkable journey, including completing a highly demanding testing programme spanning 2.5 million kilometres. This is a simulation of more than 400 years of use for a Rolls-Royce, on average, and covered all 4 corners of the globe to push this new motor car to the limit.

Spectre is a 2-door, 4-seater super coupe that measures 5,475 mm long, 2,017 mm wide (excluding mirrors), and 1,573 mm tall, with a wheelbase that is 3,210 mm long. Spectre uses Rolls-Royce’s Architecture of Luxury modular platform that utilises an aluminium spaceframe chassis to scale it to various applications. Customers have a choice of 22″ wheels or 23″, the largest used for a production Rolls-Royce. On a side note, the 1.5-metre all-aluminium coach doors are the largest ever fitted to a Rolls-Royce. Also, unique to the Spectre, the driver’s door automatically closes when the brake pedal is depressed.

A pair of separately excited synchronous motors distribute a total of 430 kW (584 hp) and 900 Nm of torque to all 4 wheels. The motor at the rear is the more powerful unit pushing 360 kW and 710 Nm while the front provides 190 kW and 365 Nm. Coupled with a slippery drag coefficient of 0.25, the 2,890 kg (kerb weight) Spectre can do the century sprint in 4.5 seconds. About a quarter of the car’s weight (700 kg) is contributed by the 102 kWh lithium-ion battery that sits in the floor. This also adds 30% more rigidity to the electric motor car. The battery provides enough energy for up to 530 km of driving (WLTP) and can be charged in as quick as 34 minutes from 10% – 80% state-of-charge with a 195 kW DC charger. A full charge from empty using a 22 kW AC charger will take 5 hours and 30 minutes.

Rolls-Royce Spectre drives with Decentralised Intelligence, a software architecture with data processed closer to the source for faster response and action. A total of 141,200 sender-receiver variables each with its own dedicated handmade control are used to detect all driving variables and conditions and carry out the necessary responses.

One of the hardware that also responds to changing road conditions and provide the magic carpet ride is the Planar System suspension. On straight roads, the system can decouple the anti-roll bars to allow each wheel to act independently and prevent a rocking motion. When the system detects a corner, it recouples the components, stiffens the dampers, and prepares to engage the 4-wheel steering system.

The exterior and interior appointments are typical of Rolls-Royce i.e. luxurious, opulent. The signature Pantheon grille is the widest ever for a Rolls-Royce and is softly illuminated by 22 LEDs for a 3-dimensional effect at night. The Spirit of Ecstasy figurine has also been redesigned, including in the wind tunnel, to help achieve the low drag coefficient. The fastback styling and seamless roofline also contribute to aerodynamic efficiency.

In the car, the Starlight Doors make its debut in a production Rolls-Royce. The celestial theme continues with Spectre’s Illuminated Fascia that is the result of over 10,000 hours of development and refinement and incorporates a cluster of 5,500 stars. Furthermore, the front seats have a lapel section that can be rendered in contrasting or matching colours to the main base, as inspired by British tailoring. The interior of the car is open to near-infinite Bespoke possibilities, limited only by the customer’s imagination. Likewise for the exterior which comes in over 44,000 shades.
