You’re looking at the new Renault 4 concept car being prepped by the French car brand to showcase at this month’s revived Paris motor show.
Its debut will happen 30 years after production of the original 4 ended. Little has been officially confirmed on the new R4 show car, but a brief statement said design vice-president Gilles Vidal’s team ‘has given a modern twist to an iconic model that left its mark on the 1960s, ‘70s, and ‘80s. The show car will also resonate with younger generations.’
Why the Renault 4 is coming back from the dead
Renault had already confirmed in 2021 that it was developing a second B-segment EV to sit alongside the Renault 5 electric car, currently codenamed the ‘4ever’.
The brand revealed the first details and a reductive teaser image of the front end of the new car, showing a rectangular ‘grille’ and headlights complete with Renault’s new badge front and centre.
The 2022 show car is designed to invoke the classic Renault 4 – one of the brand’s most iconic models – and reimagine it for the electric age.
‘We will revive another major, I would even say iconic car,’ Renault boss Luca De Meo told viewers of the online eWays ‘ElectroPop’ conference in 2021. ‘Internally, we named it 4ever to signify our intention to make it an instant classic.’
The new Renault 4ever will use the brand’s new CMF-BEV platform – an electric version of the platform used on the Clio and Captur – which claims around 248 miles of range on a charge.
The announcement comes as Renault fleshes out its electrification plans even more, with the aim to make 90 per cent of its European sales fully electric by 2030. The brand says 10 new EVs will hit the road by 2025; this, the MeganE and 5 EV and four more unnamed Renault models, along with three new EVs that will become the next generation of Alpines: a hatchback, SUV and an EV sports car.
We’ll update this article when we get more details.
