While most of the news on Ford Motor Company has been rather good, now comes a new recall for a fire risk with late 2020 to early 2021 assembled 2021 Ford Expeditions and 2021 Lincoln Navigators. While the cause hasn’t been identified, of the 16 fires that have occurred so far, 12 have been reported to have started while the vehicle engine and power were turned off.
The recall was posted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on May 17, 2022 and the report states that 39,013 Expeditions and Navigators are affected by this recall. Ford has confirmed that 16 fires have occurred on Expeditions and Navigators built between December 1, 2020 and April 30, 2021. Twelve of them happened while the vehicle was turned off completely, and 14 of the 16 happened to rental vehicles. One person was injured, according to NBC, but no building fires have been reported.
For now, Ford’s only recommendation is to park affected Navigators and Expeditions outside, but you are able to continue driving them. Also, according to that same NBC report, the fires appear to occur at the backside of the engine on the passenger side, but no root cause has been determined. “We are working around the clock to determine the root cause of this issue and subsequent remedy so that customers can continue to enjoy using their vehicles,” Jeffrey Marentic, general manager of Ford passenger vehicles, said in a statement to NBC.
To know if your SUV is part of the recall, you can find the build date on the door jam decal. It’s located at the top left and should say “DATE” followed by a two digit month and two digit year. If you’re having trouble finding your door jam decal, you can reference the NHTSA’s website and it allows you to enter your VIN to see if your vehicle is part of this recall.
