The 1960s was definitely a decade for American muscle. Carmakers such as Ford were seemingly not content with base versions of their offerings, so they spiced them up with more muscle. These spicier models are now more difficult to find, so when the Auto Archaeology heard of a 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1 Super Cobra Jet, it had to feature this unrestored classic car on its YouTube channel.
A Rare 1969 Mustang Mach Super Cobra Jet 3.91
Ryan Brutt – the self-dubbed auto archaeologist – has been digging up classic and vintage cars from barns and garages. His efforts have led to some of the most fascinating barn finds, including a 1968 Hurst/Olds now undergoing a meticulous restoration. This time around, Ryan found himself in Michigan with his friend Doug, owner of this 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1.
Wrapped in Acapulco Blue exterior finish, this 1969 Mach 1 is definitely not an ordinary Mustang. It was originally a 428 Super Cobra Jet, which means it was once delivering 335 hp of max output and 440 lb-ft of peak torque via a four-speed transmission. Furthermore, this Mustang Mach 1 came with a Drag Pack, a package that transforms it into a drag racing machine thanks to a traction-lock differential, upgraded crankshaft and flywheel, among others. According to Doug, his Mustang Mach has a 3.91 rear axle assembly.
A Mach 1 Meant For Street Racing
According to Doug, the original owner purchased this 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1 when he was still a teenager (with his mom co-signing the loan). Apparently someone with the need for speed, the first owner, took out a number of stock parts and replaced them with ones that would satisfy his street drag racing cravings. For instance, he installed a 1967 Shelby GT500 intake with dual quad setup as well as manual drum brakes.
The original owner apparently drove this 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1 like crazy on the streets. The car lasted after just 24,861 miles of driving, and the owner blowing not just one, but two engines until he decided to store the Mach 1 for good in 1974.
1969 Mustang Mach 1 Up For Restoration Soon
Sometime in 2004, Doug’s friend Tim heard about this 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1. After a quick negotiation, Tim purchased the car from the original owner. Since Tim is a more of a hot rod guy, he sold the Mach 1 to Doug. Doug is currently busy with another restoration project, but he is targeting to restore the Mach 1 next.
