After the Mercedes-Maybach S‑Class and the S650 Cabriolet, Mercedes’ luxury sub-brand has added its magic touch to a rather unexpected model – the open-top G‑Class.
The G650 Landaulet as what it is called, is Maybach’s first ever pickup truck to make it to its portfolio.
According to Maybach, this special all-terrain vehicle, which is limited to only 99 units, was designed to meet the expectations of customers who demand the very highest standards of their G-Classes.
Measuring 5345 mm long with a wheelbase length of 3428 mm and a height of 2235 millimetres, there is almost half a metre of ground clearance and ample space and comfort for four passengers.
Outside, there are exclusive “Landaulet” lettering worked into the rim flanges of the ceramically polished 22‑inch 5‑twin-spoke light-alloy wheels, front and rear underride guards, as well as large carbon fibre wheel-arch flares.
Inside, the rear seats are taken straight from the S-Class. And then, there is the electrically powered folding roof. There is also an electrically operated glass partition which separates the rear compartment from the driver’s section. The best part is that the glass can be changed from transparent to opaque at the press of a button.
The seats, which can be set to a fully reclined position, also come with a massage function. The cherry on the cake however, has to be the large business console with thermal cup holders between the individual seats.
Similar to an aircraft seat, the centre console comes with two tables which can be easily folded in or out with one hand. The table tops have leather inserts to provide a comfortable writing surface or to allow the use of tablets and notebooks.
As elegant and luxurious as it is, the Landaulet G 650 is a complete beast, powered by the most powerful engine Mercedes has in its collection – a V12 biturbo engine which delivers a 630 hp and 1000 Nm of torque.
All the power is not only reserved for tarmac, but also for the beaten track. Similar to the AMG G63 6×6 and G500 4×42, the Landaulet comes fitted with portal axles which provide ample ground clearance, allowing the open-top all-terrain vehicle to overcome even extreme obstacles in masterly fashion.
Of course, the latest “G” also features the typical 100 per cent differential locks which can be engaged while on the move, as well as the low off-road ratio of the transfer case, making it a true off-roader that can take on the likes of Range Rovers and Jeeps.
Like all other variants of the G-Class, the Mercedes-Maybach G 650 Landaulet, too, will be produced by Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria. It is expected to make its world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2017.
