Koenigsegg don’t do half measures, hence why so much of its engineering innovation is unlike anything else. It often independently comes up with solutions of its own, and it’s the same story in terms of design. Koenigsegg’s design house – called RAW – has been working with a student to create a vision of what a new entry-level model might look like.
Esa Mustonen is studying industrial and product design at the Lahti Institute of Design in Finland, and has been working with Koenigsegg as part of his graduation thesis. Guided by Christian von Koenigsegg and Head of Design Sasha Selipanov, Esa created the RAW concept car that has been publicly revealed today.
The three-seat supercar would in theory become the baby of Koenigsegg’s range and be powered by a 690bhp variant of the Gemera’s 2.0-litre, three-cylinder engine. 443 lb ft of torque is on tap, allowing for a 0-62mph sprint of around three seconds. Extensive use of lightweight carbon fibre would result in this supercar weighing just 700kg, allowing for a perfect 1:1 power to weight ratio in terms of horsepower.
This concept car’s design steps away from Koenigsegg’s traditional river pebble silhouette in favour of straight edges. Its distinctive looks wouldn’t appear out of place in a Tron movie, but its party piece is its doors. Dramatic rear-hinged scissor doors open vertically to reveal a cabin featuring a similar three abreast layout to a McLaren F1. The roof also retracts to allow easier access for the central driver.
The whole supercar is mighty attention grabbing, and we’re confident that Esa will achieve is bachelor's degree if this concept is anything to go by. As for the model itself, it remains a rendering for now, but Koenigsegg has been diversifying its range of late, so never say never.
