Todo un adelantado a su tiempo.

Con ánimo de demostrar de lo que era capaz el Centro de Diseño de Citroën, el fabricante francés mostró en el número 65 de su revista corporativa un prototipo desconocido, de curiosas e inéditas formas, que hasta el momento nadie había visto antes.

Fue en otoño del año 1981, y se trataba del llamado Citroën Xenia, a medio camino entre una berlina al uso y un modelo familiar, con cierto aire de monovolumen, que destacaba por una gran superficie acristalada y un diseño bastante afilado, enfocado en la aerodinámica.

Aquella creación de Citroën, concebida como una mirada al futuro de la marca, vino precedida por otro prototipo, el Citroën Karin presentado el año previo, del que el Xenia bebió en términos de estilo, y que estaba caracterizado por una curiosa forma piramidal. 

Firmado por el diseñador Trevor Fiore, fue creado como un GT para el año 2000 (a 20 años vista, recordemos), aunque como era habitual en la época, no se trataba de un coche funcional, sino de una maqueta a escala.

El Citroën Xenia en cuestión medía 4,2 metros de largo, así que hablamos de un vehículo con una longitud ligeramente superior a la del Citroën C3 Aircross (4,16 metros), pero lejos de la del nuevo Citroën C4 (4,36 m). 

Uno de los principales rasgos del modelo, además de la gran zona acristalada, eran las dos puertas delanteras, de tipo alas de gaviota, que daban acceso a un habitáculo con cuatro asientos individuales, aparentemente cómodos y bien mullidos.

Otros concept olvidados

Y hablando del interior, el Xenia fue también escaparate de una avanzada electrónica para la época, como un ordenador de a bordo que calculaba consumos, autonomía restante o velocidad media, algo que posteriormente llegaría a los CX y BX de serie.

Otro rasgo interesante del habitáculo, diseñado por Michel Harmand, era que tras el volante había un sinfín de botones y mandos para controlar los diversos sistemas del coche, justo debajo del cuadro de instrumentos. Una solución que, desde luego, no caló en el sector.
