Seriously quick Audi SQ8 TDI diesel gets the same muscular triple turbocharged V8 as the bigger SQ7 SUV
Audi has launched yet another new performance flagship for its SUV range with the arrival of its 320kW Audi SQ8 TDI.
On sale in Europe in the next few weeks, the Audi SQ8 TDI coupe-SUV features the same twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 mild hybrid powertrain that, as well as its impressive peak power, produces a monumental 900Nm or torque.
Combined with an eight-speed automatic and Audi’s famed quattro all-wheel drive, the SQ8 TSI is capable of launching to 100km/h in just 4.8 seconds and onto a limited top speed of 250km/h.
Sharing the same V8 TDI as the Audi SQ7 TDI, the advanced 4.0-litre features sequential turbocharging with a small turbo boosting low-down torque with a larger turbocharger coming online at 2200rpm providing plenty of top-end thrust.
If that’s not enough, another electric compressor powered by a separate 48-volt lithium-ion battery, rids the V8 of any lag at low engine speeds.
As well as power and torque, the mild hybrid powertrain also recovers energy using a belt-driven alternator that recovers up to 8kW under braking.
Like its bigger sibling, the Audi SQ8 TDI gets adaptive air suspension with the option of four-wheel steering, a rear-biased sports differential and new active anti-roll bars.
Gaining sportier styling, the SQ8 features 22-inch alloy wheels, HD matrix LED headlamps and the option of carbon ceramic brakes.
Inside, the SQ8 gets leather and Alcantara sport seats, stainless steel pedals, a WiFi hotspot and an Amazon Alexa onboard assistant.
Prices for the SQ8 will be announced later but expect a healthy premium over the $128,900 Audi Australia charges for the entry-level Q8 55 TFSI quattro is certain.
For those you who think the 320kW Audi SQ8 TDI still isn’t fast enough for an SUV, Audi Sport is rumoured to be readying an even faster RS Q8 version that’s expected to get a turbo V8 hybrid powertrain that could produce as much as 500kW and 850Nm of torque.
