With Brexit finally happening there are a number of new rules concerning travel to Europe from the UK, and one of the biggest things that drivers should be aware of is the need for a car insurance green card. Under previous laws we could drive in the EU simply with a regular certificate of insurance, and that would only need to be produced if questioned by police. However, from now on anyone from the UK driving their own car in Europe must also carry an insurance green card.
What is a car insurance green card?
A car insurance green card is an official, multi-language document which proves you have car insurance. It is now a legal requirement to carry one whenever you are driving in Europe and proves you have sufficient cover in the event of a crash or accident. Oh, and it’s green in colour, as you might have guessed.
How do I get a car insurance green card?
It’s simple to get a car insurance green card, all you need to do it get in touch with your insurance supplier and request it. It’s important to tell your insurer which countries you are planning to visit, as each individual country may require specific proof. For example, if you are driving through France to get to Spain your green card may need to reflect that, rather than a blanket card which covers both countries. A blanket card may be sufficient but it’s not worth taking the risk.
How much does it cost to order a car insurance green card?
Most insurance companies will issue them for free, especially if you request it to be sent digitally. You must remember to print it out before travelling if you do this though.
Which countries require a car insurance green card?
It is now required in all 27 member counties which make up the European Union, as well as Switzerland, Russia, Andorra, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Serbia.
Do I need to add anything to my general insurance policy?
No, all UK insurance policies offer at least third party insurance in the countries which require an insurance green card. The card is simply proof you have car insurance in the UK with an official insurer.
How early should I apply for a car insurance green card?
If you’re requesting it to be sent via post then you should apply at least two weeks before you travel to make sure it arrives in time. Most importantly, your insurance green card must have at least 15 days of cover on it before entering the country, in much the same way as your UK passport needs to be valid for at least six more months before flying, otherwise you may be breaking the law.
