Porsche Cayenne Takes Annice Lyn Exploring Around Malaysia

Photojournalist Annice Lyn took a journey around Malaysia, exploring lesser known places in the peninsular and immersing in the local culture. Before becoming known as a visual storyteller, Annice was a national figure skater. Her passion for documenting sports photography led her to become the first and only Malaysian female photographer whose work was accredited for the XXIII Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang in 2018.

She is also a Canon Malaysia EOS Youth Ambassador and co-founder of Women Photographers Malaysia, focusing on developing an inclusive culture through visual storytelling. Her advocacy in bridging the gender equality gap earned her a listing in Forbes’ 30 Under 30 Asia 2021. Further, her work was recently on the cover of TIME magazine’s April 2021 issue. Other major global publications that have featured Annice’s work include National Geographic, The New York Times, Prestige, and Tatler Asia.

Recently, she recently went on a journey around Malaysia with the Cayenne SUV, the first Porsche model to be assembled outside of continental Europe. As an ardent believer in the saying ‘a picture is worth a thousand words’, Annice’s nationwide journey allowed her to capture unfiltered and authentic depictions of people and landscapes.

“I still get excited every time I travel, even if it is now part of my work. Once hard concrete expanses give way to rolling forestry, I am filled with a sense of freedom and wonder – embracing me like an old friend,” Annice reminisces.

Leaving the urban landscape of Kuala Lumpur, she travelled to Gua Kajang in Perak, near the Lenggong Valley archaeological location that is a UNESCO heritage site. “Through projects that I’ve been a part of, I discovered a hidden gem in Lenggong Valley. With so much history to uncover and so many possibilities to explore, it offers a surreal sense of escape into a different world,” said Annice. The Porsche Cayenne is fitted with the Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) to comfortably cushion its occupants from bumpy terrain and road imperfections.

Out from Lenggong, Annice then drove to Kuala Sepetang, a picturesque fishing village formerly known as Port Weld. The quiet roads punctuated by road signs and the occasional street-side store offer Annice a chance to reflect on the philosophy of mindfulness and gratitude for the simpler pleasures in life.

“The friendly locals welcomed and invited me to learn the traditional art of mat weaving. It is such an intricate process, and the attention to detail is second to none. Handcrafted by the locals, each mat is unique and resembles the personalisation of the Cayenne: tailored to every individual,” she commented.

She eventually made her way back to Kuala Lumpur, stopping at heritage buildings such as 117-year-old Rumah Tangsi which once was a townhouse for businessman Loke Chow Kit, as well as the 112-year-old Sentul Depot which for a time, was one of the largest railway engineering workshops in the world, housing the most advanced locomotives and railway carriages. Both of these sites have been transformed into centres for creative arts. “As a visual storyteller, I believe that photography is a tool that allows me to capture the present and preserve the past. I’m glad that these historical sites are given the appreciation they deserve, and the community is able to breathe new life and purpose into these century-old buildings,” she said.

Another location for the local arts scene is the refurbished Zhong Shan building. Built in the 1950s, the building is home to the likes of art collectives, letterpress printers, independent booksellers, and underground musicians. Annice also explored a contemporary letterpress stationer, The Alphabet Press. “Although hand applied printing is a traditional technique used centuries ago, the fine craftsmanship results in meticulous works that exude a sense of understated elegance. This is not unlike the intricate detail inside the Cayenne, where fine materials and exquisite craftsmanship is also on subtle display.”

“Rediscovering my roots as a Malaysian, this adventure with the Cayenne gave me a different point of view – and I can’t wait to share it,” Annice said. The 340 hp from the Cayenne’s 3.0L V6 engine enabled Annice to explore Malaysia’s landscape with ease, from the asphalt to the winding hilly roads to the dirt trails.
