And it's rear-wheel-drive.
Thanks to the magic of the internet and American ingenuity, you no longer have to wonder what would happen if you put a twin-turbocharged LS3 V8 from a Chevrolet Corvette into the rear of a Porsche 911 (997).
The mad folks at ScrapLife Garage recently found out what happens when you combine the two, and the result is magical. This is just the first video in what we assume will be a series documenting the build. What we see in this video is the finished product with custom-made exhaust manifolds. As you can imagine, the exhaust manifolds aren't the only custom job.
If you're going to swap a flat-six with a twin-turbo V8, almost everything needs to be custom.
This particular video documents the making of the custom exhaust system, and the welds alone are worth watching the video for. Josh from JCH Weld Fab built the custom exhaust and twin-turbo kit for the car, and watching him work in the early stages of the video is a pleasure. The attention to detail and the quality of his welds are Singer-like, which is just what you want to see when creating something as unique as this.
With that done, the LS3-powered 911 spluttered to life, sounding demonic. This is one 911 that's definitely not welcome in California, where noise laws can sometimes be unreasonably enforced.
The next step was to put the car on a dyno to see how much this demonic lovechild of America and Europe's best has to offer. The first run produced 842 horsepower and 781 lb-ft of torque at the wheels.
While that figure is staggering, it brings with it two problems. The first is the clutch, rated for no more than 700 lb-ft of torque. That doesn't stop the guys from going at it again, and this time the Porschette produced 918 hp and 754 lb-ft of torque.
Apart from the clutch, there is one other issue. This is obviously a rear-driven 911 and not an all-wheel-drive monster like the 911 Turbo.
How is it going to put all that power through the rear wheels? Sure, 911s haven't been widowmakers for a while, but we're talking about a car that makes more power than Porsche's upcoming RWD GT2 RS, rumored to produce 700 hp.
The 911 went to the local racetrack to see how it performed, but the team ran into some overboost problems. A few kinks still need to be ironed out, and the car's weak point is, predictably, the gearbox.
As mentioned earlier, this is just the first video, and we look forward to seeing the ScrapLife Garage finetune this mad creation until it works optimally.
