New lightweight limited-edition Porsche 911 could be the lightest and most expensive 992 to date
A nameplate not seen since the early 1970s could be returning to the Porsche 911 range and it’s one that a lot of readers may not have heard before.
Our spy photographers have managed to snap what’s believed to the 2024 Porsche 911 ST – marking the resurgence of a nameplate that once adorned the back of a limited-run road-going racer – lapping the Nürburgring wearing a concoction of GT3 Touring and GT3 RS body work.
Finished in signature Porsche prototype black paint and fitted with clearly disguised front wings, the production version of the development vehicle is widely anticipated to be positioned as a happy if niche medium between the subtle GT3 Touring and all-out GT3 RS, in honour of the original ST that claimed the title as the lightest 911 variant ever made (at the time).
Under the predominantly Touring body is a naturally-aspirated big-bore 4.0-litre flat-six expected to split the 375kW and 386kW outputs of the GT3 and GT3 RS respectively, and the ST could tip the scales at less than 1450kg, which should make it the lightest 911 variant of the latest 992 generation.
The prototype looks to be riding lower than a standard GT3 Touring and can be seen here riding on a set of standard black GT3 wheels, behind which reside enormous track-oriented brakes – possibly carbon ceramic.
This means potential customers can expect an extensively stripped-out interior with a sea of carbon-fibre and plenty of other weight-saving components including the RS’ fabric interior door-pulls.
Just 24 examples of the original 911 ST were created and this modern rendition will likely be equally as exclusive and expensive.
Overseas reports claim Porsche is planning to launch the ST as a 60th birthday present to itself in early June – possibly even on June 8 to commemorate the day the first Porsche production vehicle was registered.
The original Porsche 911 ST made a name for itself in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and it’s a convenient co-incidence that the 2023 edition of the famous French enduro will take place over June 10-11…
