Three leading car makers have posted significant increases in electric car sales in the first half of the year, with
The newly listed EV specialist Polestar says it more than doubled its deliveries in the first six months to June 30 to 21,200 EVs, up from 9,510 cars in the same period in 2021.
It expects to deliver 50,000 EVs in calendar 2022, boosted by the removal of restrictions in China, and boosted by the first portion of its huge order book with Hertz. The Polestar 2 has also been the top selling EV in Australia in the month of June.
Meanwhile, German luxury carmaker Mercedes-Benz said battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales increased by 134% over the first half of the year to 45,400 units. The big increase in EV sales came despite an overall 16 per cent fall in car sales to 998,000 over the same period.
The big increase was credited to the serial production of the Mercedes-Benz EQE which began rolling off the production line during the quarter, and will be further boosted by the release of the EQS SUV in the current half.

Mercedes-Benz’s decision to switch its Entry Luxury category to electric is also gathering pace, with BEVs accounting for 14% of overall Entry Luxury sales, an increase of 50% compared to the second quarter of 2021.
“The electric ramp up is gaining traction,” said Britta Seeger, member of the board of management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG.It shows that we offer compelling electric vehicles that our customers desire.”
Rival German car maker BMW said world-wide sales of its fully electric BMW and Mini models in the first half of 2022 more than doubled those of the same period in 2021, with 110.3 per cent growth.
In Australia, the local success was reflected in fully electric BMW models recording quadruple figure percentage growth following the launch of the iX3, iX and i4.
The iX3 recorded 237 registrations between January and June, while the iX saw 155 registrations in the same period.
The i4 Gran Coupé – whose line-up includes the first emissions free BMW M car, the M50 – also saw triple figure registrations with 133 vehicles finding new customers in the first half of 2022.
