Peugeot Australia has confirmed it will bring the just-revealed 408 liftback to local showrooms, but stopped short of verifying timing.
With the 408 due to launch in international markets early next year, it is likely the 408 will land Down Under in the latter half of 2023 or early in 2024.
Billed as a “fastback” positioned “at the top of the C segment”, the new 408 will compete against the likes of the Toyota Corolla, Mazda3, Hyundai i30, Skoda Scala and Honda Civic in the popular small-car market.
However, to differentiate itself from the rest of the mainstream pack, the 408 packs a lifted fastback style that is a cross between a small sedan and coupe-like SUV.
Measuring 4.69m long and with a 2.79m wheelbase, the 408 outsizes the Corolla sedan, and also sports a generous 536 litres boot that can expand to 1611L with the rear seats folded.
Inside, Peugeot’s i-Cockpit instrumentation is fitted, which features an all-digital cluster, touchscreen multimedia system and small-diameter steering wheel.
Powering the 408 is a range of three engines – two of which are hybrids – with an all-electric variant due down the track.
The base car will make use of a 97kW petrol engine, while adding an electric motor boosts outputs to either 134kW or 168kW in flagship form.
Regardless of engine, all 408s are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.
The 408 will be built in France for the European market initially, but Peugeot will also produce the new model from Chengdu, China for other markets, including possibly for Australia.
Peugeot Australia boss Kate Gillis said more information would be announced soon.
“We are currently working closely with the factory on launch timings for our market and look forward to sharing more information in due course,” she said.
The 408 will join the 2008, 308, 3008, 508 and 5008 in Peugeot Australia’s line-up.
