Stellantis brand Peugeot has unveiled the model update of its 508 series. The core of the upgrade is a new exterior design, but there is also a change in the plug-in hybrids offered.
The 180 e-EAT8 plug-in hybrid is new for the 508 series. This PHEV variant sits on the EMP2 platform and combines a 110 kW gasoline engine and an 81 kW electric motor, both driving the front axle. Thus, the 132 kW PHEV does not differ in terms of engines from the 165 kW version with the sales designation “225” – but their interaction is controlled differently by software.
The above-mentioned PHEV with 165 kW system output also remains part of the lineup. In other words, the PHEV range is extended downwards. The top model remains the PSE version (for “Peugeot Sport Engineered”) known from the predecessor with a 265 kW PHEV all-wheel drive. The plug-in hybrid’s battery has a capacity of 12.4 kWh.
“We’ve got some great models, and we want to keep the same-sized range, the same number of models. So it’s all about refreshing each of our models as we come along,” explained Peugeot CEO Linda Jackson, who said the brand has no intention of axing model lines as it reinvents itself.
The new design, which will launch with the model update in June, is even more striking than the changes under the hood. For one, the front end around the grille will be more dynamic, as the grille is fully integrated into the bumper design – and no longer stands out from the bumper as a specially framed radiator grille. In addition, the LED light signature of the front headlights picks up the “3 claws” design of the lion brand, previously found mainly on the taillights.
In the next generation, the Peugeot 508 could also become an all-electric car, although Peugeot has not officially confirmed this. According to reports, a purely electric 508 could debut as a competitor to the Tesla Model 3 or VW ID.7 in 2025.
