The EV maker will build the winning entries in 1:1 scale for next year's Shanghai auto show.
Polestar- Polestar opens this year’s design contest with Performance being the theme for 2022, after two successful years.
- The EV maker will integrate the two winning designs, interior and exterior, in a 1:1 scale model for display at the Auto Shanghai motor show in 2023.
- The deadline for entries is August 31 of this year, with the shortlisted entrants set to receive feedback from a team of Polestar designers.
Polestar is launching its third annual design contest after two successful editions, and this time Performance will be the theme. And the brief this year is “to design a Polestar that is about the experience of performance, and the advanced technical story that enables this in a sustainable way.”
The EV maker will crown two winners—one for exterior design and one for interior design—with the winning design set to be built into a 1:1 scale model that combines the two designs to be showcased at the Auto Shanghai motor show in April of next year. That’s one of the biggest stages in the world of auto shows at the moment, and easily the one with the greatest variety of EVs and hybrids, given China’s focus on New Energy Vehicles.
“For a design to be presented on the world stage in much the same way as one of Polestar’s own concept cars is a money-can’t-buy opportunity for any designer,” says Maximilian Missoni, Head of Design at Polestar. “We want to encourage, support, and celebrate innovative design, and the people who realize it. What better way to do that than to present a full-size model of their creation center stage at one of the largest automotive shows in the world?”
The designs themselves do not need to be a car, Polestar says.
Polestar
Last year the theme was “Progressive,” while in 2020 it was “Pure,” with Polestar preferring to keep the brief open to interpretation. Like the past two years, shortlisted contestant will receive feedback and guidance from Polestar designers through the course of the contest.
In previous years submitted designs have been as diverse as a electric-and-helium airship, a car that reduces pollution via externally visible air filters, a luxury yacht, and prosthetic springboard blades for walking. So the design entries are by no means confined to things automotive.
“I believe this year’s ‘Performance’ theme will capture the imagination of a design community that has responded extremely creatively to our Design Contest thus far,” says Juan Pablo Bernal, Interior Design Manager at Polestar, and founder of the Polestar Design Contest. “I’ve been truly inspired by the array of submissions that continue to harness the essence of our brand in such a captivating way. We expect this year will be no different – the paradigm has shifted from high-consumption performance of the 20th century, so we are looking for design ideas that embody that shift.”
