Rockstar is clearly very sorry about how badly the November release of these remasters went.
Rockstar has decided to offer anyone who owns Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition on PC a free game, and will make the same offer to anyone who purchases the trilogy until Jan. 5.
As VGC reports, the offer is being made alongside the Rockstar Store sale. If you do own or decide to buy the GTA Trilogy, there’s five free games to choose between, or an in-game currency offer for either GTA Online or Red Dead Online. The full line-up of options includes:
- Bully: Scholarship Edition
- Grand Theft Auto IV: Complete Edition
- Grand Theft Auto V: Premium Edition
- LA Noire
- Max Payne 3
- A Great White Shark Cash Card for GTA Online
- 55 Gold Bars for Red Dead Online
If eligible, simply visit the promotion link for this “holiday bonus offer,” login to your Rockstar Store account, and pick which product you would like. You may also want to check out the sale as discounts range from 20-70%.
The offer follows a difficult launch for the trilogy, which was pulled from sale the same day it released on Nov. 11. It turns out a number of files had been unintentionally included with the release and Rockstar needed time to remove them. The files removed are thought to have included unlicensed music, full game scripts with developer notes, content that had been cut from all three games, and the infamous “Hot Coffee” mini-game from San Andreas.
After that, Rockstar admitted the remastered games should not have been released due to the state they were in. The original versions were then made available through the Rockstar Store while the remasters were fixed. The physical versions of the trilogy for consoles were also delayed, most likely because Rockstar wanted to ensure it can ship a version with all the necessary updates included rather than relying on a large day-one patch.
