Let the games begin!
Singapore is about to play host to over 100 esports players from all over the world at the inaugural Global Esports Games. The event will kick off at Resorts World Sentosa from 18 to 19 December.
The Global Esports Games (GEG) is a multi-title competition, featuring games like Dota 2, eFootball 2022 and Street Fighter V: Champion Edition. Taking place alongside the competition is GEFcon, an international convention of esports thought leaders from the Global Esports Federation.
Dota 2 is likely the biggest game players are going to tune in for. Eight teams across two categories have qualified for the game, including a Singapore team in both Open and Women’s categories. Great Britain, Mongolia, Brazil and Paraguay will join Singapore in these categories. Wilson ‘Poloson’ Koh Chin Wei will compete in Singapore’s Open Team, after competing at the Southeast Asian Games in the Philippines in 2019.
Wilson said:
Esports’ inclusion in the SEA Games was significant as it boosted visibility and gave the public a little more insight to what esports is about. I’m excited to compete on home soil and hopefully this will lead to more interest in esports, whether in DOTA 2 or the other two games, Street Fighter V and eFootball 2022.
Players from across Africa, Asia and South America will also join the Street Fighter V: Champion Edition and eFootball 2022 finals. Each player had previously gone through national and regional qualifiers before making it to the big leagues in the GEG. You can check out livestreams of GEG through Twitch, Facebook, YouTube, Huya and GosuGamers.
Meanwhile, GEFestival is taking place outside the Resorts World Convention Centre, hosting 400 fans to watch all the action unfold live. GEFcon will also feature members of the esports industry, as they share their expertise with attendees.
