Danny Schaffer's Mustang bagged the Outstanding Engineering and Street Machine of the Year awards.
The seventh-generation Ford Mustang may be on its way to dealers, yet the very first iteration still holds a strong desirability factor. Collector and classic Ford enthusiast Danny Schaffer is one of the many that caught the love bug as he brought a 1967 Mustang Fastback in for a resto-modification project.
When Schaffer started the project, the car looked different from what he intended. He tapped California-based Ironworks Speed & Kustom to help him build the pony car. The result was an award-winning Ford Mustang – bagging the Outstanding Engineering accolade at the 2023 Grand National Roadster Show and the Street Machine of the Year award at the 25th Summit Racing Nationals.

What makes this an award-winning build? Exterior-wise, the Mustang, dubbed DS-500R, kept most of its 1967 body panels but was added with a few bits for that reimagined look. The beefy custom hood is a standout addition, complemented by a new front fascia and rocker panels.
As a resto-mod project, the shop installed EVOD wheels (19-inch at the front and 20-inch at the rear) in gold, which give the classic body a modern contrast. It was also predominantly finished in metallic gray paint and a few chrome trimmings on the front and rear bumpers.

The subtle modernization mods continue into the cabin with the addition of a modern red supercar-inspired layout with black contrasts and Dakota digital gauges. Moreover, the shop installed custom bucket seats, a roll cage, leather-wrapped steering wheels, and a DS-500R plate badge on the dash.
Under the hood is an SVT second-generation GT500-sourced 5.4-liter V8 with a bigger supercharger, aftermarket fuel injection, and sweet-sounding Borla mufflers. No power figures were disclosed, but the engine is paired with a performance-ready six-speed Tremec T-56 manual transmission. Other performance bits include a Detroit Speed front suspension, a four-link rear suspension, RideTech coilovers, and red Wilwood calipers on 14-inch slotted discs.
