Tesla offers some of the best electric cars available — but a problem area over the years has been reliability. Much to the ire of Elon Musk, Consumer Reports has downgraded Tesla models due to various reliability issues. However, there’s an exception. In 2023, only one Tesla electric vehicle is recommended by Consumer Reports: the 2023 Tesla Model 3 sports sedan.

The 2023 Tesla Model 3 earned the highly coveted recommendation from Consumer Reports. The organization evaluated all the other currently available EVs from Tesla, including the Model S sports sedan, Model Y crossover SUV, and Model X SUV. However, the Model 3 is the only one to earn a spot on CR’s recommendation list in 2023.
As one of the most trusted authorities for automotive evaluations, CR’s recommendations carry a great deal of weight. Many automotive shoppers are more likely to buy a vehicle if they see it on the list. Considering this, the recommendation for the Model 3 is especially impactful.

While Consumer Reports uses multiple criteria in choosing its recommended vehicles, reliability is a very important factor. If it weren’t for reliability issues for the Model S, Model Y, and Model X, they would likely join the Model 3 on the recommendation list. CR determined that the Model 3 is reliable, but the other Tesla electric cars are not.
And the reliability, along with the recommendation, is based on CR’s annual Auto Reliability Survey. Consumer Reports recommended the 2022 Tesla Model 3 — and following the results of the most recent Auto Reliability Survey, the recommendation holds in 2023.
For the Auto Reliability Survey, CR evaluated 17 potential problem areas during the previous 12 months. Owners submitted surveys for over 300,000 vehicles, including the Model 3 and the rest of the Tesla electric car lineup. Examples of problem areas include noises, engines, electrical systems, paint, brakes, and leaks. The Model 3 is reliable in the potential problem areas, so the EV sports sedan retained its CR recommendation in 2023.
Other EVs that earned a spot on CR’s list
Tesla kick-started the EV wave — and has long dominated the electric car segment. However, other automakers are catching up with high-quality EVs of their own. Consumer Reports recognizes this trend with its list of recommended electric cars. For 2023, in addition to the Model 3, this includes the 2023 Kia EV6, 2023 Hyundai IONIQ 5, and 2023 Nissan LEAF. Also, the organization recommends plug-in hybrids (PHEV) as well — such as the 2023 Toyota RAV4 Prime.

If you want to get a reliable Tesla electric car, then check out the 2023 Tesla Model 3. With it faring well in the annual Auto Reliability Survey, it’s the only Tesla model recommended by Consumer Reports in 2023. While the rest of the Tesla vehicle lineup is strong in other areas, such as acceleration, driving dynamics, and technologies, they lack the high reliability of the Model 3.
