The 2023 GMC Terrain is GMC’s smallest crossover SUV option right now, but like any other car, the Detroit-based automaker has given it some updates for the new model year. The updates are primarily minor. The only major update is an option. Here’s a look at the 2023 GMC Terrain and its updates for the new model year.
What has not changed about the 2023 GMC Terrain
Overall, the 2023 Terrain is not that different from its 2022 version. This shouldn’t be surprising for any GMC fans, as GMC recently gave the Terrain and a few other SUVs a refresh for the 2022 model year. This refresh mainly changed the SUV’s looks, as the Terrain’s grille, bumpers, and lights all received updates.
As a result, many of the Terrain’s specs remain unchanged between the model years. Front-wheel drive is standard, with all-wheel drive as an option. The only engine available is a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with a nine-speed automatic transmission. The standard Terrain gets about 25 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on highways, for 28 mpg combined.
GMC gave the Terrain a 7-inch touchscreen as standard, with an 8-inch available. The Terrain will still have a lot of smart safety features, including automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control. The Terrain’s cargo capacity also remains about the same, maxing out at about 63.3 cu-ft of cargo capacity.

While the Terrain has mostly remained unchanged for the 2023 model year, GMC did give the SUV one big update, according to Cars. The 2023 Terrain will get a new package option called the Denali Black Diamond Edition, and as its name suggests, it adds some luxurious features to the GMC SUV. The Denali Black Diamond Edition costs about $3,200 and includes some aesthetic upgrades.
With this package, the Terrain gets 19-inch darkened wheels and an Ebony Twilight Metallic black paint job. This option also gives owners the Denali Premium Package, a luxury equipment package. The Denali Premium Package will provide owners with adaptive cruise control, a 360-degree camera system, and a panoramic moonroof.
2023 GMC Terrain minor updates
Besides that brand-new option, the Terrain also received a few minor upgrades. For example, while the Terrain only has one engine option, it now gets slightly more horsepower. The 2022 Terrain’s 1.5-liter engine got 170 hp, and GMC bumped up the 2023 Terrain’s power output to 175 hp. According to Cars, GMC also added an electronic brake-assist feature. This should improve how the Terrain brakes.
The other minor changes to the Terrain affected how it looks. GMC reworked the wheels on the Elevation edition, for example. Now, they’re 19-inch gloss-black wheels. GMC also added three new paint options for the SUV: Sterling Metallic, Volcanic Red Tintcoat, and Deep Bronze Metallic. Sterling Metallic and Volcanic Red Tintcoat are available on all Terrain trims, but Deep Bronze Metallic is only available on the Denali trim.
As with any new car, the pricing has changed for the 2023 model year. The Terrain now costs $1,500 more across the board than the 2022 version. The standard Terrain now costs about $31,000 with the destination fee included.
