One of the transitional steps toward an electric vehicle (E)V future will be plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). That’s because they provide a balance of specs and features while being relatively clean. Many automakers have at least one PHEV model in their lineup, but one automaker, in particular, is ahead of the pack as it has five PHEVs available right now. Here’s a look at Volvo, the only automaker with five PHEVs in its lineup right now.

This is what a PHEV is

A PHEV is supposed to be a transition point between regular hybrids and full-on EVs. Like a regular hybrid, a PHEV has a gas-powered engine, but like an EV, a PHEV also has the ability to travel in battery-only mode.

That allows PHEVs to strike a good balance in terms of practicality. It can save drivers a lot of money on short errands, as drivers can take that trip on battery-only mode, thus meaning they don’t have to pay for gas. As for longer trips, drivers can drive in hybrid mode, so they won’t have to worry about running out of electricity and recharging. According to EV Adoption, only Volvo currently has five PHEVs on the market.

1. 2023 Volvo XC60 Recharge Plug-in Hybrid

The XC60 is currently the best-selling Volvo model, and the Recharge is the PHEV version of it. According to Volvo, the XC60 Recharge is a compact luxury crossover, starting at about $57,000 MSRP. Its PHEV powertrain gets a combined 455 hp. It also has a 14.9 kWh battery allowing it to travel 35 miles in battery-only mode. In hybrid mode, it has a fuel economy of 63 MPGe combined. It seats five and has a max cargo capacity of 63.3 cu. ft.

2. 2023 Volvo XC90 Recharge Plug-In Hybrid

The XC90 Recharge is a midsize luxury crossover, starting at about $72,000. It has three rows of seats, allowing it to seat up to seven people. It has a max cargo capacity of 85.7 cu. ft. and is powered by a PHEV powertrain that gets 455 hp combined. It can travel up to 32 miles in battery-only mode and has a hybrid fuel economy of 58 MPGe combined.

3. 2023 Volvo S60 Recharge Plug-In Hybrid

The S60 Recharge is a compact luxury sedan starting at $51,000. It seats five and has a max cargo capacity of 11.6 cu. ft. Like the XC60 Recharge and XC90 Recharge, the S60 Recharge also has a PHEV powertrain that gets 455 hp combined. Since it’s a small sedan, it has a superior battery-only range of 41 miles, which is tied for the most range of all Volvo PHEVs. Its hybrid fuel economy is 74 MPGe combined.

4. 2023 Volvo S90 Recharge Plug-In Hybrid

The S90 Recharge is a midsize luxury sedan starting at about $71,000. It also seats five and has a max cargo capacity of 13.5 cu. ft. Just like the other Volvo PHEVs, its powertrain gets 455 hp combined. It gets about 38 miles in battery-only mode and has a hybrid fuel economy of 66 MPGe combined.

5. 2023 Volvo V60 Recharge Plug-In Hybrid
