The Chinese electric car manufacturer Nio has announced another model: the Nio ES7 will be unveiled in mid-April and is scheduled to go on sale later this year. Nio has apparently identified the upcoming long-wheelbase version of the BMW X5 as its main competitor.
The Nio ES7 is a five-seat electric SUV that will be positioned between the ES6 and ES8. According to Chinese media, the details go back to Qin Lihong, the president and co-founder of Nio. The comparison with the BMW X5L also comes from Qin – the Nio is “not a backward car” compared to the BMW. With a debut in April, an unveiling at or before the Beijing Auto Show is highly likely.
“Our delivery target for this year is up to the supply chain, and we will increase our capacity this year and deliver as many as we can,” Qin said. However, the manager did not provide more details on the production and semiconductor supply situation at the media event.
The ES7 is to be based on the NT2.0 platform. Nio’s current electric SUV models – the aforementioned ES8, ES6 and the SUV coupe EC6 – are still based on the first generation of the platform. It is therefore not clear which data on the powertrains and batteries can be transferred to the ES7. However, it is likely that the ES7 will adopt the known 75 and 100 kWh battery versions, in order to be compatible with Nio’s own battery exchange system.
The two sedan models ET7 and ET5 are also based on the second generation of the Nio platform and also use the two batteries – a version with 150 kWh is said to be in development. In terms of connectivity, Qin says the ES7 will be based on the two sedans and thus stand out from the other SUV models.
For a long time, there had been speculation in the Chinese media about which third model Nio would offer on the NT2.0 platform. Since there were also reports about a project with the code name ‘Gemini’, some Chinese observers came to the conclusion that Gemini must be a new sub-brand with an entirely new model. Nio President Qin stated at the event that the Gemini project was the internal name for the ES7.
