The new tiller will reportedly arrive in 2025.
The yoke steering wheel hasn't necessarily been a hit among consumers, with brands like Tesla receiving backlash over the feature. But that doesn't seem like a concern for Mercedes-Benz.
According to Germany's Handelsblatt, the German automaker could add the yoke steering wheel to its flagship luxury sedans, the S-Class and EQS. This would eliminate the need for the hand-over-hand method, which might require drivers to get used to.
To make the system work, Mercedes-Benz reportedly plans to remove the mechanical steering column and replace it with a full steer-by-wire system. It uses sensors to send steering input to the wheels electronically. Thankfully, the automaker also plans to replace capacitive buttons with physical buttons.

One benefit of the yoke is improved visibility, as it doesn't block the instrument panel and road from the driver's point of view. The wheel could also get completely removed from view by retracting it into the dashboard. This is possible through the Level 3 semi-autonomy technology that comes with the brand's Drive Pilot system.
Here in the US, the Drive Pilot will be offered as an option in the 2024 S-Class and EQS later this year. The states of California and Nevada have already approved the use of an SAE Level 3 amid concerns from law experts. However, the rumored yoke won't likely be available until 2025.

Considering the deadline is still in the next four years, Mercedes-Benz should have much time to refine the system. This is the same approach used by Lexus for delaying the yoke in the RZ, saying there's nothing wrong with it. Toyota's luxury division wants to ensure it is perfect before reaching customers.
Leaked images hint that the upcoming Tesla Cybertruck will be installed with an improved yoke steering wheel. The technology may be off to a bad start, but developments from brands suggest it is not going anywhere.
