VW has revealed the next-generation Tiguan which is scheduled to go on sale in 2024.
The new SUV sports a unique, somewhat polarising design, an all-new interior, and a raft of powertrain choices including petrol, diesel, and mild and plug-in hybrid options.
Everything new
The Tiguan now sits on VW’s MQB evo platform which has allowed the automaker to improve its best-seller in “practically every area.”
Most notably, the next-gen SUV is identified through a completely revised design underscored by “very flat” LED headlights, a glass-covered horizontal strip on the nose, a larger grille with air openings located at the outer edges of the bumper, side air curtains that ensure optimum air routing, a more pronounced shoulder line, a new LED light strip on the tailgate, and redesigned alloy wheels up to 20 inches in diameter.
For the first time, the Tiguan can optionally also be equipped with the IQ.Light HD Matrix headlights with 19,200 multipixel LEDs per cluster, which was previously only available on the flagship Touareg.
The interior of the VW has similarly seen its fair share of upgrades and is unmistakably more modern than before.
The front fascia incorporates the Digital Cockpit driver’s display, a central control panel of up to 15 inches with an entirely overhauled menu structure and graphics, a more advanced heads-up display, and a new rotary controller for the infotainment system with its own integrated screen that can be used to set the driving profile, radio volume, or background lighting colours.
Furthermore, buyers can install the ergoActive Plus seats with four-way lumbar adjustment and 10-chamber massage functions, as well as a setting for the automatic activation of seat heating or ventilation at certain outside temperatures.
As standard, the Tiguan now comes with a substantial list of convenience and assist features including a lane-keep system, lane-change assist, autonomous emergency braking, a rear-view camera system, and dynamic road sign display.
An extensive range of optional add-ons is available, too, including Park Assist Pro with remote parking capability and Trailer Assist for assisted manoeuvring with a trailer.
Thanks to its clever packaging and 3cm-longer body, the new Tiguan also provides 37 litres more cargo space in the back for a total of 652 litres.
The complete range of available powertrains will be announced as the new Tiguan is rolled out to the market, however, VW said that it will be available in turbo-diesel (TDI), turbo-petrol (TSI), mild-hybrid (eTSI), and plug-in hybrid (eHybrid) guises, all of which will be paired exclusively to an automatic transmission.
Moreover, the gear shifter will now move to the steering column as opposed to being in between the front seats – similar to Mercedes-Benz.
The manufacturer confirmed that the eHybrid variants will be capable of providing an all-electric driving range of up to 100km, they will offer faster AC charging, and that DC fast charging will be possible as standard for the first time.
The new architecture further ensures more stable, agile, and precise handling than before due to the revamped adaptive chassis control programme and new Vehicle Dynamics Manager system that made its debut in the eighth-generation Golf GTI and controls the functions of the electronic differential locks and the lateral dynamics components to best suit the situation at hand.
The market-specific features, engines, and model line-up of the new VW Tiguan will be revealed closer to its launch date in 2024.
