The Tiguan is Volkswagen’s best-selling vehicle in Canada and the U.S. with roughly 125,000 units sold in total in 2021. It’s also a global sales success and therefore needs to be carefully — and wisely — updated to maintain its position in the segment. The latest spy shots  of the ICE-powered model in Austria reveal a very premium-looking small SUV that only gets better from there.

One reason we expect the next-generation Tiguan to be good is that it is clearly being benchmarked against the Volkswagen Touareg. In fact, and based on our spy shots, the Touareg happens to be an R to boot. Upon closer inspection, we can see the physical similarities between the two starting with the pinched upper front and rear fenders.

Beyond this, the next Tiguan lines up more with the current ID.4 with a near fascia-wide front grille with integrated LED headlights. The larger air intakes integrated into the front bumper are also comparable to those on the Atlas twins. Overall, the compact SUV looks as though it will maintain the current SUV’s proportions along with similar outer dimensions.

The main reason for the next Volkswagen Tiguan’s unmodified footprint is that it will continue to be assembled on the automaker’s MQB Evo platform. However, it will be available with a series of powertrain options from pure ICE to hybrid and plug-in hybrid alternatives, as well as a fully-electric iteration. Internal combustion engines will continue to make up the bulk of sales for now as VW expects 25 per cent of its global sales to be attributed to EVs by 2026.

Interior upgrades are difficult to decipher from the provided shots, but it’s expected that more technology will be jammed into the dashboard including a fully-digital cockpit, an advanced head-up display, and hopefully a steering wheel devoid of haptic buttons — something VW has admitted it will fix in the very near future. And, of course, it will also feature a number of state-of-the-art advanced driving aids.

The next-gen Volkswagen Tiguan is expected to be introduced in 2024, with a rumoured full release for the 2025 model year.
