Don’t you hate it when you buy something at full price at the grocery store only to see it go on a massive discount at the same place later on? Now imagine that on a much larger scale — we’re talking about an $80,000 electric vehicle with discounts up to 20 per cent off.

Reports of Tesla owners feeling “duped” are being shared this week after the EV maker slashed prices on a number of its new models, an act that also impacts resale prices. The move is likely an attempt to draw more buyers into Teslas, as well as a way for some of the brand’s models to squeeze in under the existing U.S. tax credits.

The Model Y, for example, was formerly US$77,000 and is now $13,000 less. “I feel like I got taken advantage of as a consumer,” said Marianne Simmons, a 32-year-old from Naples, Florida. “Right off the bat, I’m out $13,306. It’s such a large reduction that it’s going to affect a lot of people who just bought a vehicle.”

In Canada, price drops range from eight per cent on the Model X and Model 3 base trims, to 17 per cent on the Model Y Long Range.

2024 Corvette E-Ray is the fastest of all time

The Corvette has gone electric! Not entirely, but enough to make the new Corvette E-Ray hybrid the fastest Vette ever made. Previewed this week, the 2024 E-Ray uses a mid-mounted 6.2L V8 making 495 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque, and works with a high-output electric motor that adds another 160 hp and 125 lb-ft of torque for the front tires while also adding only 118 kg of curb weight. Add that up and you get (beep, boop, beep…carry the one) 655 hp, which is enough to launch the E-Ray to 100 km/h in under three seconds.

It’s also the first hybrid Corvette, capable of six kilometres of electric-only driving, and the first to run with all-wheel-drive. The added electric power and Performance Traction Management system make for an interesting drift experience. “During the autocross,” writes Driving contributor Graeme Fletcher, “the back end was so far sideways, I was looking out the passenger window to see where we were going.”

Chevy has priced the 2024 Corvette E-Ray at $128,798. Pricing for the convertible model is expected soon.

These were Canada’s worst-selling vehicles in 2022

If you added up every Canadian sale of every model listed in this list of 2022’s worst-sellers, you’d get a total of 7,086. That’s less than 0.5 per cent of all new vehicles sold. In other words, there’s not a lot of new Nissan Versas, Toyota GR86s, or Jeep Renegades on roads these days.

Excluding vehicles over $100,000, vehicles with no back seats, discontinued models, and vehicles not on sale at the onset of 2022, the list of bottom-barrel rides also includes the Kia Niro, Mazda MX-30, Subaru BRZ and Legacy, Nissan Armada, and Kia K5. But it was the second-best-selling car brand in Canada in 2022 that was responsible for the worst-selling model. The Toyota Sequoia likely won’t hold the worst-selling title next year as its new-generation models were only recently made available — of the 146 models sold in 2022, 95 of them were moved in Q4.

Size Matters: Study suggests thinking you have a small penis makes you more likely to want a sports car

Science is adding some credence to an old saying about dudes with powerful cars. You know the one…

The non-peer-reviewed study was performed at a university in London and has been titillatingly titled, “Small Penises and Fast Cars: Evidence for a Psychological Link.” In it, researchers pulled a bit of a dirty trick on their male test subjects, making them think they were answering a marketing survey and then convincing a group of them that their bits were on the small size of average before dangling hot cars in front of them and asking how badly they wanted them. Sure enough, the group made to believe they were less well-endowed were more inclined to express desire for the sports cars presented. The men convinced of the opposite, that their cup size was larger than most, were less impressed by the cars.

“The link between driving a fast sports car and having a small penis is a widespread cultural trope, discussed by academics from Freudian analysts to evolutionary theorists,” the study reads. “For the first time, we show that it is grounded in a psychological truth. We found that experimentally manipulating men, especially older men, to feel that they have relatively small penis caused them to increase their desire for luxury sports cars.”

Wyoming politicians want EVs banned by 2035

Some politicians in Wyoming have written a bill that reads partially as a love letter to the oil and gas industry and partly as a death sentence to all EVs. The Senate Joint Resolution 4 bill, which only takes a couple minutes to read, was introduced last week with the listed goal of “phasing out new electric vehicle sales by 2035.” Lofty, and clearly not real. By the tone, it’s apparent this isn’t actually destined to be passed, but rather meant as a publicity stunt from an anti-EV and pro-gas government.

According to the document, EVs are “impractical” in a state, such as Wyoming, that has “vast stretches of highway, coupled with a lack of electric vehicle charging infrastructure.” Besides, who can forget all the favours gas-powered cars have done for the state, like “created countless jobs” and “enabled the state’s industries and businesses to engage in commerce and transport goods and resources more efficiently throughout the country”?

Message received, Wyoming. If you’re headed to the Cowboy State, make sure you’re fully charged before you go.
