South African pricing for the new Subaru Crosstrek has been listed, showing that when the crossover goes on sale in the coming weeks it will be available from a starting price of R579,000 – a R115,000 premium over the outgoing XV.
Like the XV, Subaru’s new entry-level offering will only be sold in two specifications – iS and iL – each sitting on a petrol platform, though the manufacturer’s local subsidiary previously confirmed that it is “in discussions with Subaru Japan to make the hybrid Crosstrek available for our market.”
The Crosstrek is the third iteration of the XV, boasting improved ride quality and equipment along with an updated design.
Crosstrek specs
Similar to its forebear, the new Crosstrek is powered by a 2.0-litre boxer engine in partnership with a Lineartronic continuously variable transmission (CVT).
The layout generates 115kW and 196Nm and directs power to all four wheels, and it features a new ability called “motor assist” that delivers a more “nimble-feeling ride” than before, said Subaru.
Fuel consumption for the new crossover is then listed at 7.2l/100km, 0.1l/100km better than for the XV.
Design-wise, the Crosstrek looks akin to its predecessor but visibly more modern.
The sharper LED headlights are now connected with a horizontal crossbar, the grille boasts a new pattern, more protective cladding is seen along the sides, the fenders protrude further at the rear, and the iS wears 17-inch alloys in a new design whereas the iL gets 18-inch ones.
Noise and vibration levels have been enhanced, too, as have handling stability and rider comfort thanks to structural improvements made to the Subaru Global Platform on which the Crosstrek is built, said the company.
At a length of 4,495mm, width of 1,800mm, and height of 1,600mm the Crosstrek stands 30mm longer and 15mm lower than the XV while ground clearance has remained 220mm.
Inside the cabin, upgrades take the form of an 11.6-inch vertical display in the middle replacing the dual-screen setup from before, offering Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, voice commands, in-built navigation, remote engine start with climate control pre-conditioning, and boundary, speed, and curfew alerts.
Additionally, the Crosstrek’s revised seats provide better pelvis support than the XV’s and the cameras have been improved to show nearly double the viewing angle, with the iS getting a rear-view camera while the iL sees a four-lens, 360-degree setup.
Standard fitments further comprise full-LED high and low beams, LED cornering lights, rain-sensing wipers, keyless entry and start, a multifunction steering wheel, climate control, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, and seven airbags.
Opting for the pricier iL brings leather upholstery, an electric driver seat, high-beam assist, LED daytime running lights, and a sunroof. The range also offers 320 litres of boot space.

Each model is sold with a 5-year/150,000km warranty and a 3-year/75,000km service plan.
