J.D. Power U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS)
The VDS is an annual survey that J.D. Power conducts on 3-year-old vehicles to measure their reliability. It has been conducted annually for over three decades and is considered one of the most authoritative and comprehensive measures of vehicle reliability.
Vehicles examined in the survey were first examined in the J.D. Power Initial Quality Study (IQS), which was conducted when they were 90 days old. Both studies aim to help automakers design and build better and more reliable vehicles and help consumers make informed choices to improve their ownership experience.
The study collects data relating to vehicle dependability from thousands of original owners of the vehicles. The 2023 study was conducted on 30,062 original owners of 2020 model-year vehicles, and the 2022 study was conducted on 29,487 original owners of 2019 model-year vehicles.
The survey, which was redesigned in 2022, evaluates 184 problem symptoms experienced during the previous year of ownership across nine major vehicle categories:
- Exterior
- Driving experience
- Features/Controls/Displays (FCD)
- Driving assistance
- Infotainment
- Seats
- Climate
- Interior
- Powertrain
Using the data collected, J.D. Power creates a dependability rating for each vehicle examined, expressed in the number of problems per 100 vehicles (PP100). For example, a vehicle with 10 PP100 has experienced 10 problems per 100 cars over the past 12 months.
Ram’s commitment to improvement
Brands with fewer problems per 100 vehicles are more dependable than brands with more. And if the number of problems for a certain brand or model reduces from one year to the next, it indicates the manufacturer is taking steps to improve the dependability and quality of their vehicles.
In the 2022 VDS, Ram had 266 PP100. It was the second-most-unreliable brand. The most unreliable was Land Rover, with 284 problems per hundred vehicles. In the 2023 VDS, Ram had improved by 77 PP100 to 189 PP100. It had the most significant improvement, followed by Volvo (41 PP100 improvement) and Nissan (35 PP100 improvement).
Additionally, in the three years between the IQS and VDS, Ram had a lower increase in problems in 2020 model year vehicles than in 2019 model year vehicles. It had a 105 PP100 in the 2019 IQS, which increased by over 160 to 266 PP100 by 2022. In the 2020 IQS, it had 141 PP100, which only increased by 48 to 189 by 2023. That is an impressive improvement.
The improving PP100 indicates that Ram is committed to improvement and is taking steps to make their vehicles more reliable. It shows it actively listens to customer feedback and addresses their issues to improve its customers’ ownership experience.
