► Renault’s Espace returns
► Likely to be an EV
► Revealed in spring 2023
Renault has confirmed that the Espace will come back for a new generation.
The Espace is one of Renault’s most iconic nameplates, practically inventing the people carrier segment when the first one arrived in 1984. This new one would be its sixth generation, when it launches in the spring of 2023.
Few details are known about it so far, but Renault says it’ll run on the CMF-CD platform. That’s underpinned cars from the Renault Nissan Alliance for almost a decade, including the previous generation Espace (which we never got in the UK due to low demand), the previous-generation Megane, current Nissan Qashqai and Renault Austral.
All of those are combustion engine cars, which may make you think the new Espace would be the same. But that golden ‘E’ seen on the tailgate of the car in a teaser video implies otherwise; it’s used for Renault’s battery-electric cars and seen on the Megane E-Tech Electric. More recently, the CMF-CD platform has been used by Mercedes for the T-Class and, crucially, the EQT – a pure-electric version of its van-based MPV.
Renault says the new Espace will seat five and seven people when it arrives, and (cue a rolling of the eyes and a groan from the distance) even calls it an SUV.
We’ll have to hang on for more details, so stay tuned.
