Swedish brand’s next model will come in the form of an electric coupe-SUV
- Sits between Polestar 2 and 3 in growing lineup
- All-new electric underpinnings
- Set to arrive before 2025
The upcoming Polestar 4 SUV has been spotted testing, suggesting the new car is likely to be fully revealed before the end of 2023. Somewhat confusingly, the Polestar 4 will slot in between the Polestar 2 saloon and Polestar 3 SUV in the Swedish brand's lineup, sitting as a coupe-SUV rival to the likes of the Tesla Model Y and the forthcoming Porsche Macan EV.
As you can see from our exclusive spy photographs, the Polestar 4 will adopt a much more swooping silhouette than the Polestar 3. Despite the heavy camouflage, we know that the ‘4’ will don many of the now-trademark Polestar design cues such as T-shaped headlights – reminiscent of the brand’s ‘Polar Star’ logo – as well as a blanked-off grille, flush-fitting door handles and a full-width light bar at the rear.
Polestar boss, Thomas Ingenlath, has previously said the car will overall be smaller than the Polestar 3, but he reassured family buyers by saying: “[it] will not compromise much on the interior length”.
“Aerodynamics will play a much higher role in design and the designs we are doing, but generally I think the electric age will bring designs much more respectful of aerodynamics. The combination of sitting in a very sporty cabin but that much higher off the ground, you get that feeling of being elevated. I think that concept will be a very interesting one for a future SUV.”
Speaking of the Polestar 4’s cabin, it will get the same next-generation design as debuted in the Polestar 3; this centres around a huge 14.5-inch touchscreen in the centre console, which runs Google-based software and is partnered with a small display behind the steering wheel for the driver.
Polestar has been outspoken about its commitment to sustainability and the Polestar 4 is likely to continue this with an interior wrapped in sustainable fabrics and recycled materials. It’s also expected that Polestar’s latest model will be its second to be offered with the ‘Pilot Pack with LiDAR’, which adds extra cameras and sensors, opening up the possibility for fully-autonomous driving in the future.
The Polestar 4 is confirmed to be the first car to sit on the brand’s all-new SEA electric car architecture. This has been designed to allow for batteries up to 110kWh in capacity and electric motor systems rated up to 637bhp. A setup such as this would give the Polestar 4 the ideal kind of performance to rival the likes of the Porsche Macan EV, which is expected to arrive before the end of 2024.
But what about the Polestar 4? Well, with testing seeming to ramp up in recent weeks and months, it’s quite possible that we could see the new car fully revealed by the end of 2023; if this is the case, we could expect the new car to go on sale towards the end of 2024.
Pricing is difficult to pinpoint at this stage, although Ingenlath stated in 2021 that the Polestar 4 could start from around €45,000. Taking into account significant inflation since then, car buyers can expect the Polestar 4 to start from around £55,000 when it finally goes on sale.
