Mild-hybrid drivetrains and sporty new variants coming for Mazda’s small car and SUV range
Mazda Australia has announced a host of updates for its Mazda3 and Mazda CX-30 model lines, with the Japanese brand’s popular small car and compact crossover both picking up new entry-level mild-hybrid powertrains.
Dubbed G20e Evolve M Hybrid, the new additions will be powered by the naturally-aspirated 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine and 24-volt mild-hybrid system already seen in the Mazda MX-30.
There’s no pricing details available yet ahead of their arrival in the final quarter.
However, the deployment of the e-SKYACTIV G hybrid powertrain that develops 114kW/200Nm and sends drive to the front wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission, as well as the Evolve trim level, will see the G20e M Hybrid models positioned below the equivalent top-shelf X20 Astina SKYACTIV-X mild-hybrids priced beyond $40,000.
The X-rated versions use a force-fed 2.0-litre engine that develops 132kW/224Nm.
Full details and specifications, including fuel efficiency figures, are yet to be confirmed, however the MX-30 version returns 6.4L/100km on the official combined cycle.
The new G20e Evolve M Hybrid models will also come standard with Advanced keyless entry and a 10-way power adjustable driver’s seat with memory.
Across the broader Mazda3 and CX-30 line-ups, Mazda has added a fresh ‘SP Vision Technology’ grade.
That means Mazda3’s standard Evolve grade will be renewed as G25 Evolve SP, bringing black 18-inch alloy wheels, a blacked-out grille and side mirror caps, and black cloth seats with red accents.
Other new features across the Mazda3 range include the addition of a leather-clad steering wheel and gear knob for the entry G20 Pure, while the flagship X20 Astina brings improved engine sound and ride comfort. The manual transmission option has also been deleted.
Elsewhere, the CX-30 Touring is said to be more customisable than before, with the new SP variant adding black metallic 18-inch alloys, Burgundy leather trim, black dash and door trims and black wing mirror caps.
The updated CX-30 G20 Pure also now gets a leather steering wheel and gear knob, while the CX-30 G20 Astina brings an electric sunroof.
A Platinum Quartz exterior paint option is now available across the CX-30 range, while Platinum Quartz Metallic is available for the Mazda3 range. Sedan versions of the Mazda3 can also now be had in Polymetal Grey, while the Titanium Flash hue option has been discontinued.
Mazda Australia says customers can now pre-order the updated 2022 Mazda3 and CX-30 models, however a spokesperson said CX-30 deliveries aren’t due until mid-November, followed by the Mazda3 hatch and sedan by early December.
