The full reveal is just weeks away.
Lexus has released another teaser image for the all-new GX. This time it's a single image, but Toyota's luxury brand also revealed that the GX will debut on June 8.
The new images reveal little. As we said when the first images surfaced, the Lexus GX luxury off-roader will share some design DNA with the Tacoma, Tundra, and Sequoia. We include an image of the Sequoia's rear end in the image block below so you can have a look for yourself.
The GX will have the same blocky design as the abovementioned Toyotas, but with some Lexus style added to the mix. Like the LX600, the rear lights are connected by a LED light bar, but whether the obnoxious spindle grille will also be part of the mix remains to be seen.
Nothing concrete has been announced, but the new GX will almost certainly ride on the modular TNGA-F platform. The interior will mimic that of the Sequoia. While Lexus has always tried to hide its Toyota roots, the LX and GX have traditionally been equipped with carry-over interiors with more upmarket materials. For proof, look no further than the interior of the current-generation Land Cruiser (sadly not available in the USA) and the LX600.
The GX's 4.6-liter naturally aspirated V8 engine will almost certainly be killed off, and good riddance. Given its size, the power output of 301 horsepower and 329 lb-ft is not good enough anymore.
The big question is what Lexus will replace it with. Rumors of a turbocharged four-cylinder hybrid powertrain have been circling since late last year.
Now that Toyota has unwrapped the 2024 Tacoma, the iForce Max four-cylinder powertrain seems inevitable. The Tacoma's turbocharged 2.4-liter four-pot is helped along by 48-hp electric motors, and the combined output is 326 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque. It may have half the cylinders but easily betters the old V8 engine on paper.
We think the iForce Max will be the base engine, while the 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 hybrid powertrain from the Sequoia will power top-spec models. Here the total system output is 437 hp and 583 lb-ft of torque, but it may be detuned to avoid cannibalizing the LX's sales.
Lexus will also use this opportunity to bring the GX up to speed in the technology department, so expect a host of interior screens, a terrain response system, and Lexus' latest suite of safety systems.
