The Recon will be Jeep’s off-road focused EV SUV and the Wagoneer S the all-electric premium model
Jeep’s pure-electric strategy is well under way, with the upcoming Recon set to sit alongside the recently announced Avenger and Wagoneer S. While Jeep hasn’t said if the Recon or Wagoneer S will come to the UK (which the Avenger wil), there are plans to bring them both to Europe by 2025.
The Recon is pitched as a rival to the likes of the new Hummer EV and the Bollinger B1, and Jeep says it has unashamedly taken design cues from the Wrangler, giving the new car an upright stance, a bluff front end, wide haunches and chunky bumpers. Like the Wrangler, the doors of the Recon are designed to be removed and the roof is retractable to give occupants an added dose of the great outdoors.
The Wagoneer S, however, will be positioned as a premium SUV, to go up against the BMW iX, Audi e-tron and Mercedes EQS SUV. Jeep claims the Wagoneer S will offer a range of 400 miles, with over 592bhp from its battery propelling the car from 0-60mph in 3.5 seconds.
Jeep is keen to stress the Recon won’t be a replacement for the Wrangler, despite it being a similar size. To distinguish the Recon from the Wrangler, Jeep will offer the Recon with pure-electric power only. As with every Jeep model, it’ll be available with four-wheel drive as well. There’s no word on the battery size or what platform the Recon will use, although it’ll sit on a bespoke EV architecture.
To help give the Recon genuine ability off the beaten track, it’ll come with Jeep’s Selec-Terrain traction-management system, under-body protection, tow hooks and aggressive off-road tyres as standard.
We’re yet to see inside the upcoming Recon, but we expect a cabin more akin to that of the rough and ready Wrangler than the premium-focused Wagoneer S.
Jeep says production of the Recon and Wagoneer S will begin in 2024 and they will be launched in Europe by 2025. A fourth pure-electric Jeep SUV will arrive in 2025, however the American firm has yet to reveal any details.
