Some competitors already offer electric alternatives, such as the Vauxhall Vivaro Electric and Renault Trafic E-Tech Electric.
The new Ford Transit Custom will be made alongside the VW Transporter in Turkey.
New 2023 Ford Transit Custom and Ford E-Transit Custom price and release date
The new Ford E-Transit Custom is the headline model for the new van range. Prices have not been confirmed yet, but are expected to be competitive with rivals. The Vauxhall Vivaro Electric costs from around £39,500 (excluding VAT), and buyers can deduct £5,000 thanks to the Plug-in Van Grant.
Diesel-engined versions of the Ford Transit Custom are expected to arrive before the pure electric model. These are likely to cost a similar amount to today’s van, which is priced from £28,145 excluding VAT. Expect to see them in showrooms from summer 2023.
Production of the electric Ford E-Transit Custom will begin in autumn 2023, at the firm’s plant in Turkey. Ford has invested $2 billion to upgrade the factory to build electric vans.

The new Ford E-Transit Custom has a more distinctive look at the front, with an enlarged (and closed-off) grille, a stylish new bumper and ultra-slim LED headlights. It has a full-width LED light bar and an ‘E’ logo in the grille. The charge socket is at the front, beneath the right headlight.
The new Ford Transit Custom diesel and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models will look similar, but won’t be as glitzy as their electric sibling. They will have conventional grilles, rather than the smoother, wind-cheating face of the E-Transit Custom.
The new Ford Transit Custom range has a sleeker profile, with more rake to the windscreen to help improve aerodynamic efficiency. Aero performance is further improved by a small roof spoiler, while the rear lights now boast LED technology.
Inside, the new Ford Transit Custom and Ford E-Transit Custom have a digital-first appearance, with screens built into a seamless widescreen display. The central 13.0-inch landscape-oriented touchscreen, angled towards the driver, will run the latest Sync 4 infotainment system using a 5G modem.
The new Ford E-Transit Custom will come with Ford Pro E-Telematics connected tech, and those buying or leasing the new Ford electric van get the full package free for one yea. It uses live data so that operators can monitor location, efficiency and vehicle health. EV-specific charging insights are also delivered, while users can monitor charge state on the move via the FordPass Pro smartphone app.
The new Ford E-Transit Custom will also benefit from Ford Power-Up over-the-air updates. These will see it constantly improved – and Ford will offer ‘industry-first customer experiences’ to unlock new productivity solutions for small businesses. It’s a clever new van that will continue to get smarter.
The new Ford E-Transit Custom debuts a unique feature inside: a tilting steering wheel. This folds flat to create a small table on which drivers can rest their laptop computer or paperwork. It is part of the Mobile Office pack, which also includes dimmable LED lighting to illuminate the steering wheel area, a dome light in the roof and extra storage between the seats for devices and documents.
Delivery drivers using the Ford E-Transit Custom can make up to 200 stops a day. To save time, Ford has created a Delivery Assist feature. When enabled, the hazard warning lights automatically turn on when the driver shifts into Park. When they leave, windows are automatically closed and it auto-locks. The van automatically returns to its previous settings when the driver returns.
Operators of the new Ford Transit Custom can programme the Digital Key to assign features and functions to particular drivers, just like a hotel keycard. On the Ford E-Transit Custom, the Ford ProPower Onboard system delivers up to 2.3kW through sockets in the cab and load area. These can be used for powering tools, lights and devices.
The new Ford Transit Custom and Ford Transit E-Custom are likely to be offered in standard and long-wheelbase versions. The current Transit Custom is 4.97m long in standard form and 5.34m with the longer wheelbase; the new version is expected to mirror that. Ford has confirmed the new Ford E-Transit Custom panel van has load volumes from 5.8 to 9.0 cubic metres. The maximum load length is 3,450mm.
Expect to see double cab variants of the Transit offering seating for five people, too.
Ford boasts the new Transit Custom is still less than two metres tall, helping to access height-restricted areas such as multi-storey car parks, garages and underground loading bays.
The new Ford E-Transit Custom has an impressive range of up to 236 miles.
New Ford Transit Custom and Ford E-Transit Custom: engines and gearboxes
The new Ford E-Transit Custom has an impressive 74kWh usable battery pack. This gives a range of up to 236 miles (appreciably better than the 205 miles offered by the Vauxhall Vivaro Electric with a 75kWh battery). Ford says the 236-mile range is four times what the average one-tonne van covers each day.
Those buying or leasing the new Ford E-Transit Custom can choose from either 136PS or 217PS electric motors. The electric van has a healthy peak torque figure of 415Nm.
There will also be a new Ford Transit Custom PHEV. This is likely to use the same 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo engine as the current model. It doesn’t drive the wheels directly, but powers a generator that charges the battery when it goes flat.
Today’s Ford Transit Custom PHEV has an EV range of around 35 miles, which the engine generator expands to more than 300 miles. Expect the new Ford Transit Custom hybrid to offer an even greater pure electric range.
The new Ford Transit Custom diesel will probably use the 2.0-litre EcoBlue engines seen in today’s model. This is a relatively new engine, built at the Ford plant in Dagenham; today’s engines offer from 105PS to 185PS. Ford may add 48V mild hybrid technology, to improve efficiency yet further.
The diesel-engined new Ford Transit Custom models will boast the largest payloads. The current Transit Custom goes up to 1,450kg, while the Ford E-Transit Custom has a smaller 1,100kg payload. Its key EV rival, the Vauxhall Vivaro Electric, has payloads between 1,226kg and 1,002kg, depending on battery size.
