Peugeot’s electric family hatchback is set to rival the likes of the Volkswagen ID.3 and MG4
- Unique 18-inch alloy wheels
- Range of up to 248 miles
- Due on sale next year
The Peugeot 308 is set to gain a fully electric variant next year. Dubbed the Peugeot e-308, this new model boasts a range of nearly 250 miles and will join the French marque’s growing lineup of EVs which include the smaller e-208 and e-2008 SUV.
Pricing for the new Peugeot e-208 is yet to be announced, but we expect the new car to start from around £35,000 when it goes on sale next year – SW estate models will likely cost around £1,000 more. While this is roughly £9,000 more than an entry-level petrol 308 model, buyers should be able to offset this price hike with lower running costs. The e-308 will join a rapidly developing electric family car segment, with strong rivals such as the Volkswagen ID.3 and the MG4, even if the Peugeot is likely to be much more expensive than the MG.
Under the metal, the Peugeot e-308 will sit on parent company Stellantis’ EMP2 platform, which is also set to underpin a future electric variant of the Vauxhall Astra. The e-308 gets a new 54kWh battery which Peugeot claims will provide a range of up to 248 miles on a single charge.
Mated to the new battery is a single, front-mounted electric motor with 156bhp. While performance figures are yet to be announced, we expect the e-308 to get from 0-62mph in around nine seconds – although it may feel very quick off-the-line thanks to the instant torque from the electric motor.
The Peugeot e-308’s maximum charging speed is competitive, too; plug the car into a compatible 100kW public charger and the e-308 will top up from 20-80% charge in less than 25 minutes.
As you can see, there is very little to distinguish the e-308 from any other 308 visually. The most noticeable change for this new electric model is the model-specific set of 18-inch alloy wheels; these incorporate aerodynamic trim pieces in order to maximise efficiency. Of course, there is also a smattering of ‘e-308’ badges, so passers-by won’t mistake the zero-emissions Peugeot for petrol-powered models.
On the inside, the e-308 will get Peugeot’s trademark i-Cockpit which comprises a 10-inch touchscreen as well as a digital instrument cluster. While this will retain all of the functions you’d expect such as sat-nav and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, the electric 308’s infotainment will also have specialised displays to show efficiency and range figures.
